War in the Pacific: AE - Map Mod

Since the War in the Pacific:AE map is only 270 x 200 hexes, and the SC editor lets you make maps that are 512x256, I realised you could fully replicate the WitP:AE map in SC. So that’s what I’m doing.

One thing I have learnt through this process is that it is not possible to have an ‘exact’ copy. For example – the hexes in WitP are narrow and pointy side up, while SC:WaW hexes are wide and flat side up. This means the SC map spreads out horizontally in comparison to the WitP map - even when the map takes up the same number of counters.

Therefore the coastlines are, at best, an approximation of the WitP coastlines. Although I tried to keep the hex distances the same on all coasts and landmarks, an extra half-hex was added here and there, which has spread the map out to 20 hexes wider than the WitP map. (By the same token, it is also about 10 hexes shorter.)

Similarly, cities/rail/other resources etc sit in a different position relative to terrain and landmarks. I'm having to make some adjustments here and there to ensure things like ports have a coast to attach to which has made the coastline a little weirder in certain locations.

Once I’ve finished the map (coastlines are mainly done - just going back to fill in the terrain now) I’ll post it up here. This will be the map only with no units or campaign data – I’ll be doing my own version of that (that will be more daunting than the map) but if other people want to get cracking on their own using the map, they can.

Coastlines all done per the minimap. The Phillipines and DEI were tricky, still not completely happy with how they look. Now filling in Korea and Japan.

Fixed up the crooked Indian peninsula. Most of SE Asia has been filled in now - India, Nepal, Bhutan, Burma, Thailand and Malaya all done.

Thanks Hubert and Bill for making such a great and easy to use editor. Whoever programmed in the ‘right click select’ button has saved me hours of time! The drag and drop road and rail system is also a joy to use.

After using it for 50 hours or so at the moment, my suggestions to make the editor better would be :

- The river layer is a lot more fiddly than roads/rail when it comes to river connections – it would be great to have river forks to join them up without it going haywire.

- Have the text layer visible when selecting 'all layers'.

- Some more size and placement options for terrain like fields/jungle/forest etc. In particular different sizes to match coastal tiles so they can be properly covered.

- the ability to merge layers so you can 'right click' and reproduce all layers in a tile.

- more coastal tile options would always be nice :)

Here’s this week’s update – Mountains!

This week's update - the DEI. I must have redone Borneo 5 or 6 times. Just the USA really left to do now.

Getting pretty close to done, will just do another pass over to tidy some parts up and detail some islands some more.

One thing I can't figure out is how to have city names show up underneath the city icon - editing the name of the city doesn't work. Anyone have any idea??

With the Edit Text Layer button, the same way you put 'United States' on the map. OMG, you have to go back over the entire map and add in the placenames ?!?!

Ha, yes as soon as I posted that I realised how to do it. It won't take long to do them all.

Are these meant to be used in SC WaW? If so how?

I find the map the most daunting part of modding in SC3. I don't see how you guys do it. Good work Samspackman!

Give'em Hell samspackman! Hope the project continues to go well.

I'm new to the party as it were having just picked up WAW and WIE but was wondering about a Pacific only mod at WIE scale. Your efforts here would be even better, essentially creating the opportunity for the SC WAW engine to expand to War in the Pacific AE scale.

Thanks for taking on such a daunting project.

Decided to change the islands to the SC:WaW style. These work better on this scale map where there are more ocean tiles between them.
