Last Years of the War

I see a lot of talk and complaints about the early war and how overpowered the axis are and how panzer are supermen. While those facts might be true. I feel that towards the end of the war there isn't really much point in playing once the soviets retake the initiative. No matter how many tanks i knock out the russian tank corps never seem to have to refit and just keep on coming. I encircle, then rout them and they might lose 10% of their armour. Make them retreat multiple hexes they might lose 30 tanks out of 300. Now i understand that this is payback for the soviets.
Yet in 41-42 the soviet player can encircle and cause attrition to the armoured spearheads of the axis and cause them some minor setbacks, setbacks none the less. However at this stage in the game i feel like there is no way to inflict any setbacks on the russians unless they make a significant error. This might be perceived as more of a rant, im just curious as to how axis players deal with the onslaught of the russians, other thank build fort lines, defend rivers and just retreat and conserve troops.
