I played the Europe version for a while in 2016/17 and thought I would give this a go.

I am playing as Allies first off (all countries and NATO counters). Are there any options that are considered 'standard' for new players?

Heya, Warspite. I'm close to rookie at these games, but I've played about twenty against AI and have three going against live opponents, so maybe I can share something that will be of use.

1) Set the game to the easiest levels to start with. Until you get a good handle on how the logistics (supply, HQ, and readiness) work, you're not likely to be able to spot the AI any bonuses.

2) I suggest you start as allies. Your mileage may vary, but I find it easier to grasp this game in a reactive mode, which is Allies.

3) Fog of war and weather are both pretty standard options. While there are many legitimate quibbles (particularly with the frequency and duration of weather events) It is a much more fulfilling experience using them than not.
