Sooo I was at my fav local computer retailer (Canada Computers, where the staff actually have a clue).

I was open to getting a new desktop system if it didn't get stupid. 229.00 (Canadian) isn't stupid I guess.
So I have entered 2019 (my other desktop was so 2012). It has 10 on it.

The system isn't special. Nothing to comment about. Better than the older one, and not wheezing like an old woman (like my other one ). Intel i5 quad, nothing fancy for video. I don't play fancy games. I consider anything Gary does to be the pinnacle.

Essentially, I'm pleased that the install of my wargames has gone nicely.
I'm able to play the ole Steel Panthers GE ok. With help from the Depot guys.
I'm able to play Steel Panthers III Brigade Combat (not without help from DosBox of course).
And all the rest of my treasures. TotH, SC3, WiF, all the usual titles found here from WW2 (I'm not much of a post WW2 fan really.

My computer guru buddy okydoked 10 last year, but I have not felt interested in getting it prior to a new system.
Now I have it, not overly concerned just yet. I don't do a lot beyond Facebook and my usual wargames when not watching movies through it.

The biggest cheer I guess was seeing the artillery function properly for SPWaW.
Been a looooong time since I logged much time with that old favourite.
I'd like Steel Tigers to be the next great thing I suppose.
But SPWaW Mega Campaigns is a massively hard act to follow.

Hey, if they never get the damned thing done, so be it.
But, I'm not getting any younger boys. I'm hoping to be a slow-moving granny in my 60s in a few years (that's less than 3 unfortunately). Ok, my son might make me wait a bit longer on the granny part hehe.

glad your happy and found it painless, as some do and some don't, but quite a lot moan that they won't be going with it any time soon, so also glad your games are working fine with, same as all mine, so happy days and back to normal, playing and not worrying, on something that hopefully will last you a long time, enjoy

Depending on rest of the stuff (HDD or SSD and capacity; # of RAM), you might have made a better deal with used computer. I got an used & refurbished laptop with a SSD, 8 GB of RAM, and Win10 for my mother at some 330€. I instructed her how to use Android phone as a modem, how to plug it on TV, installed some software (VLC Media Player), and bookmarked a number of sites.

Win 10 for me was a good Win release. Esp after 8. So far Win 95, XP, Win 7 and Win 10 have all been good releases I feel.

Getting Won 10 as a free upgrade was cool too.

You'll like the increase in speed and the comfort of having a huge hard drive.
As far as W10 is concerned it updates frequently and sometimes causes problems. But overall it's been OK for me.

SSD are dirt cheap now. Was shocked to see how cheap they are now. A 240 gig will be my next hardware purchase

Mine is a Lenovo refurb item.

No idea who it was made for originally.

The main details though, are the processor is definitely much faster. And I have 8 ram.
I don't play demanding games, so I don't have a dedicated video card.

Drive space, not relevant. I have about 8 cumulative TB of drives plugged into the system over all.
I immediately when I purchase a digital game, store the installer in about 4 places not physically linked.

I learned a valuable lesson when a 2TB backup drive died on me, all because it flopped on it's side while sitting on a desk surface.
Nothing is perfect. So rule one, nothing bigger than 2TB. Rule two, if it's valuable, store it in 3+ locations. Redundacy is your friend

Probably the most important aspect of my whole operation, is the internet service provider.
I'm with Teksavvy, a Canada wide business. I'm using DSL. Drop dead Rogers and Bell Canada.
A good price, and the person on the phone is a native born Canadian who speaks Canadian. By that I mean, the company uses people living in Canada.
They can spell 'SERVICE'.

Because right now, I'm posting via the internet.
Lousy service means a lousy experience.
The best rig on the market, won't matter if you can't enjoy the internet much.

No gripes about 10 as of yet.

It has takern me a few days, but, it seems, like most of my wargames are cooperating with 10.

Only one trouble spot. It appears my Conflict of Heroes has told me I lack a sufficient video card in order to play it.
Kinda irked about that.
I might see if the old desktop can manage without the video card in it.

It seems odd a game won't cooperate for lack of a decent video card eh.

Question - Apple Mac has software so that you can run windows programs.

Have any of you purchased a Mac and been successful playing all you Matrix and other strategy & war games?

Yogi, I avoid anything Apple out of principle.

When they can sell a product that's the same price as everything else, I'll be interested.

I would be concerned (regardless of price either way) that the PC windows clone software so to speak while perhaps able to work well on say word process, spread sheets etc. might have trouble being able to play many of the PC computer games whether they be Matrix, Tiller, Civ series or whatever.

I don't ever recall a posting on the forum by someone who has a MAC, tried to run the games and report the results. Again I'm interested to know if anyone has done so and how it went?

I've often seen that same question not only on this forum. I'm curious as well.

I know a few guys are happily running War in the Pacific: Admiral's Edition on a Mac computer running some type of Windows emulation software.

I am also about to upgrade and have a laptop spec question.

"8th Generation Intel Core i7-8750H 6-Core Processor (Up to 4.1GHz)" What does it mean 'up to 4.1GHz? Does this mean you have to change the settings on it or buy one with 4.1GHz?

4.1GHz means it can run at that speed under given circumstances, normally it's alot slower, as the M part of the Intel Core i7-8750H = Mobile

so most of the time it works at 2.20 GHz but can in Max Turbo Frequency mode get upto 4.10 GHz

but only when plugged in

and all the power saving features turned off

think of is this way

if the same chip, without the M part in it, and same cost tbh was running in a desktop, it would be twice as fast all the time.

same goes for any mobile GPU so graphics chip in other words, its a cut down low powered model, made to run slower and cooler.

as laptops down get the amount of air around then as the larger desktops, so can't keep the chip as cool, so with use heats up to much for the fan to get rid of it quick enough.
