Greetings and Questions

Hello all, I wanted to ask some questions of the community before I just jump into doing AARs and the like on here.

First I wanted to say that I do not OWN a copy of TOAW 4. The copy I have is from an uncle that plays the game and said "Here, check it out, its Panzer General on steroids", knowing that we both played that in our youth. But he cautioned me that I could not update the version I had since his was registered and he plays PBEM. I was only going to play hotseat maybe with my kid or against a PO, I wasn't interested in PBEM..... sloooowly I turned.....

This game is just WOW. If that one word is enough to gratify what is good about the game then there it is. However, there is another word for the not so good stuff...."ugh". Some things I wish I could do en masse but take so long for each formation.

Anyway, and before you all just comment with "...then just buy the game already", well, funds are super tight and time is even tighter. I'm pretty sure the cost vs. time/money spent will = good investment in the long run, but that's a very long run for my money right now.

I just want to ensure you all that I don't want to do anything that I'm not supposed to do with the copy I have. Obviously I can do the 2 things mentioned above, Hot Seat and PO, but I see scenarios and requests for opps for campaigns that interest me and I just want to reply all with "LETS GO!" and have fun even if failing miserably.

So, I ask, What can I do?

1. Can I PBEM with someone that has an updated version?
2. Can I download scenarios from that grand folder I see on here and have them play well?
4. skip #3
5. Can I download mods that will work on my version? i.e. the beautiful game board design.

Also, I would like to post AARs with the disclaimer that they are on the original shipped version and not updated. Would that violate some TOS in any way?

Otherwise, what a grand and wonderful product this is. I will continue to play it until I have the funds to purchase one for my very, very own.

Thank you in advance for all the help.

Hello there Thomas. My advice: consider yourself part of the community. You have access to the forum, and a copy of TOAW IV, and that's all you need. You're one of us now and Welcome. I consider 99% of us are friendly and can answer questions, share files with you and even PBEM games are available. I'm really glad you like TOAW IV as much as the rest of us do. Send me a PM with your address and I'll send you a check to cover the cost of the game. Then you'll be legit and everything will be fine. I was looking through my manual directory to see if I could find something to help you along and I found a lot of PDF's covering a lot of TOAW territory. I'll post those bad boys on this thread on subsequent posts so you guys can have them too. My advice: advertise in the opponents wanted section to find an opponent and let the fun begin. I'd love to see your AAR's and how the game goes for you. The rest of us can post suggestions and tips for you. Where are you in the world? I'm guessing the USA. I got up at 03:30-ish here in Tucson and I found your post and it made my day. The community is slowly growing now that there's a new version and that's a good thing.

You CAN play against the PO, and I do, but Elmer allows the player to develop some bad habits that can bite you in a game against a sentient being. Elmer allows things to happen that a human wouldn't. Knowing that however, you can practice your game to try different things and see what works and do sandbox tests to try out something you'd like to do in a real game. And you can write your own scenarios. Real world, or something you'd like to see done. But the overarching goal is to have fun and share that fun with others.

Here's some terrain effects charts, and other helper charts and verbage. The title of the PDF is "TOAW charts_1.2".

Welcome Tim,

Larry is really an outstanding man!

I hope you take his most generous offer and join in the fun.

TOAW is a grand game system (note the use of system) it covers everything from squad/platoon/company level action up to Armies/Army Groups, from 0.25 km/hex to 200 km/hex, 1 hour, 3 hours, 6 hours, half day, full day, half week, full week, two weeks, month, seasonal, and annual turns. From Pre-WW1 era (Civil War, Napoleonic, 1700s, etc. to 2020 and beyound).

So with so much breadth you can imagine there are scenarios covering every aspect of conflict from 1600s-2050ish?

Its pretty awesome, plus you can do your own (or accept others) graphic contributions (some like the default map graphics and what not and others like the more traditional board game style, there are at least two of those) and these can be very easily swapped out to get the look you like (although counters are a bit more tricky).

Take a look in the AAR's and you'll see what I mean.

Welcome friend!
