Thanks for the link.
Well worth the 17 minutes to watch it - not perfect, but the main points are solid. People will have a few quibbles with imperfect language by narrator, but the visualization of data makes it easier for our brains to make sense of the big numbers.

Shows very clearly and succinctly that one thing humans know how to do well is kill each other.
Technology exists now to dwarf even those figures, but what holds us in this “relative” long peace is probably the memory of the huge cost to victor and vanquished alike. Lest we forget...

Yes, those numbers are interesting. But what would they look like if the numbers were expressed as a percentage of the total population. That would be drastically different, since the numbers killed by the Khymer Rouge in Cambodia represented up to 25% of the total population.

IIRC, Belarus lost 25% of its population to the war. Other Soviet 'states' lost lesser percentages, but still staggering numbers. I think Ukraine lost 18-20% of its population. Russia
per se in the mid-upper teens too.
If one accepts the premise that China lost some 20MM people during the Second World War, what would that have equaled as a percentage of their population? I think pre-war censuses of greater China were either lacking or woefully inaccurate, so it would be difficult to really say what % that was.
ETA: As a percentage, it may be interesting to look at Yugoslavia for comparative purposes.

Ukraine was worse than you think. The 18-20% figure is probably based on the population when Germany attacked in 1941. In the period leading up to that, Stalin killed off something like 10 million Ukrainians in the Holodomor, basically by taking all the food Ukraine produced.
I don't know for certain, but I think the large Russian ethnic population in Eastern Ukraine today moved in when so many Ukrainian farmers were starved out. Amazing how long things done in the past can affect things decades/centuries later.

Don't forget the ethnic Germans from the Ukraine that were returned after the war and then killed off. As well as the Cossacks. You would also have to include other ethnic groups like Poles that were removed as well when the borders shifted.
