Erratic retreat behaviour

I have noticed that when units retreat from incoming fire, they do not always retreat *away* from the threat. Often, they would retreat at a right angle from the axis of fire or sometimes even closer to the attacking unit!

For example: I was playing the Kokoda trail as the ANZAC and in the jungle there are often fights when two ennemy units are adjacent to each other. It happened several times (on both sides) that the fleeing unit would retreat in the hex of its agressor.

I have been playing the game since v4.0 and this behaviour has been happening on all the versions since then (I'm on v4.4 now).

I don't know if this can be characterised as a bug, but do other players have the same problem?

Regards,

Christophe

As far as I can tell, units retreat towards their edge of the map. That can become a minor annoyance if the opponent has special forces or recon forces behind your lines or if a scenario is set up as a North - South battle. But I would not say it is a big problem. People tend to act pretty irrational when panicking...

I once asked the same question. Wild Bill told me the units will retreat towards the sides of the map, where retreat hexes are supposed to be. But, if the unit is boxed in, they will go where they can until they surrender or are wiped out - I've had them dance back and forth to the last man. In very rare instances, the game designer may have placed the retreat hexes on the top or bottom of the map (they're not supposed to do that) but this is highly unlikely. Enjoy the opportunity for more shots!

I usually play WWII campaign, but recently I started playing the what you might call scenario-driven Motherland campaign, and I have seen a distinct difference in retreat routs that identify with what is being said here, though there's none of that in the WWII campaign.

AS YOU MIGHT IMAGINE, EACH VERSION OF WAW
IS AN IMPROVEMENT OVER PREVIOUS RELEASES FOR ALL ¨DEEMED¨BUGS. HOWEVER RETREATING IS
DETERMINED BY A RETREAT FLAG, MUCH LIKE OBJECTIVES ARE CONTROLLED BY THE OBJECTIVE FLAG.

PLEASE TURN TO THE TIPS SECTION OF THE
JOURNAL TO READ WILD BILL`S EXCELLENT
JOURNAL ENTRIES.
ARTICLES ON THE GAME CAN CONVENIENTLY BE FOUND HERE ... http://www.matrixgames.com/insidetips.asp

YES FROM TIME TO TIME THE SAME QUESTIONS
ARE ASKED AND NO THE SAME ANSWERS DO NOT
GET POSTED EACH TIME.
HENCE AS YOU MASTER RETREAT KEEP AN EYE
OPEN FOR THE NEXT GAMER AND THAT WAY HE-SHE
WON`T BE LEFT WONDERING FOR TOO LONG ON HOW IT WORKS AND YOU WILL HAVE YOUR EXPERIENCE TO SHARE AS WELL!

PLEASE NOTE
THAT IT WAS A TACTIC EXPLOITED IN REAL LIFE
BY MOST MAJOR COMBATANTS.
TO ACHIEVE A BREAKTHROUGH IN YOUR OPP`S LINES EVEN WHEN BEING ATTACKED AND THEN TO
PROCEED TO ATTACK YOUR OPP FROM THEIR REAR AFTER SUCCESSFULLY PENETRATING.
VIRTUALLY ALL MAPS OF THE WW2 BATTLES SHOW THE GERMANS ON THE DEFENSE ATTEMPTING TO CUT ACROSS THE RUSSIAN ADVANCE - THESE TACTICS REQUIRE MOBILITY AND VERY GOOD UNIT COHESION.
THEIR EEFECTS ARE DEVASTATING BECAUSE THE SUPPLY AND RETREAT LINES ARE ENEMY OCCUPIED BUT NOTE: FOR BOTH SIDES!!!

THERE ARE MANY OTHER INTERNET SITES THAT ALSO
INCLUDE GAMING TIPS AND INFO - JUST MAKE A SEARCH USING AN ISP SEARCH ENGINE.

Setting Reinforcement Hexes In SPWAW
By Wild Bill Wilder
- Reinforcements can be vital to the creation of a Steel Panthers World At War scenario whether because it's
historically correct for the battle or to create a challenging fight. See how to set up where exactly in the scenario
the reinforcements arrive at.
THIS LINE CAN EQUALLY BE ADAPTED AS AN INTRO TO ANY OF THE FLAGS, BE THEY OBJECTIVES OR
RETREAT FLAGS AS WELL.

IF YOU UNDERSTAND HOW TO SET UP REINFORCEMENT AND OBJECTIVE HEXES THEN YOU WILL EASILY HAVE GRASPED THE SIMPLE NATURE OF RETREAT FLAGS WITHOUT EVEN HAVING READ AN ARTICLE EXPRESSLY WRITTEN ON THEM. THEY ARE VERY
SIMILAR. THEY EACH HAVE A PREDICTABLE EFFECT
ON THE UNITS.
THERE IS ALSO INFORMATION IN ALL THE SP MANUALS ON RETREATS.

HOPE THIS WILL START OFF YOUR QUEST FOR
AN EXPLANATION THAT WORKS AND PERHAPS
ONCE YOU HAVE MASTERED THE MANY NUANCES YOU
WILL SUBMIT AN ARTICLE TO TIPS IN THE JOURNAL
