Never suggest that academics fail to engage with pressing real world issues:

Not least this vitally important paper has generated five follow up papers.

There is a high casualty rate of teaspoons in short term rental properties - usually put down to people nicking the spoons to eat yogurt on the way to work.
I thought you Scots were good at counting the cutlery before guests leave.

I read it through entirely just to be sure, but just the title placed it clearly in political territory. Sorry.
Cheers

I would suggest that the money spent on the teaspoons would have been better spent investigating socks. I cannot be the only person to suffer from only ever having odd socks available in the draw or that single unloved sock all alone and despairing.

I have a Theorem that when drawing socks one-at-a-time blindly, I will always draw mismatches until all the mismatches are exhausted. If I could only get funding to prove this! It would be a great step towards solving the P vs. NP problem.

I have a simpler answer to the problem. This is really true. I have all white socks. No study needed. White Socks is the way to go.

You have put one of the pair to trash because of all the holes in it. I have done that.

Greetings to All,
Here is an example academic research on a comic book superheroin 2016:
https://www.entrepreneur.com/article/275060
Spiderman doesn’t exist.
After an extensive analysis, researchers at Cambridge University have concluded that the larger a person is, the more adhesives he would need to stick to a wall, making it virtually impossible for a normal sized human being to have the characteristics of Spiderman. “If a human, for example, wanted to climb up a wall the way a gecko does, we’d need impractically large sticky feet -- and shoes in European size 145 or US size 114,” said Walter Federle, senior author also from Cambridge’s Department of Zoology. As for Batman, the jury’s still out.

Its the Thunderdome model dryer you purchased.
Two socks enter, one sock leaves!

i showed my wife this who works in academia and she automatically recognised it as a joke - and several of the follow ups too - to me, it seems like a lot of work for joke and one that i would think few are going to read, but in her view a joke study like this doesnt take much effort at all
apparently also some academics/researchers etc get so sick of being bombarded with requests from predator journals that they do this to troll them

Is that research all made up BS then, or does it have some validity?

well my wife says the study actually would have been really carried out after looking over its method, but that really there was still not much more to it than staff buying some spoons and marking them and that this would likely have just been a spare time bit of fun - apparently there are researchers out there for who things like this - doing studies and applying scientific rigour is their idea of fun - i know my wife finds math anre excel a lot more fun than i ever will, - but then she sees me playing turnbased wargame and thinks its the most boring thing in the world and cannot understand why i would ever play such a thing.

So, you're saying we are being trolled by Australian researchers? Oh the humanity! haha!

It has always been my goal as a scientist (IRL) to get a paper published in this prestigious journal someday.
