I'm reading a terrific series of books by Rick Atkinson about the American Revolution. Most people don't realize that the war was more than Bunker Hill and Yorktown. It actually presented interesting strategic and tactical issues that came up in subsequent conflicts. For instance at what point does fighting a campaign that involves very long supply lines become virtually impossible, especially prior to the industrial revolution? Also how do you fight a professional army with untrained militia?

I'm looking for a strategic turn-based game that will help me explore these issues. I see that Matrix has two games that deal with this - Birth of America and For Liberty. Does anyone have any recommendations between these two games or any other PC games?

i like For Liberty, but it can be a bit fiddly to get working right on windows 10 and for some systems it may not work at all properly.

i dont know what you think of John Tiller's style of games but there is this

I've never play For Liberty so I can't say much about it If you decide on Birth of America buy 'Wars in America'; it's actually BOA2. Lots of scenarios including The American Revolution, The French Indian wars and the War of 1812.

Differences between the 2 game include; For liberty is IGOUGO turn based with 'hexes' while WIA is WEGO and 'Area' movement. If you like the AGEod system WIA remains one of their best even though it uses their older system.

For Liberty is a good game - the problem with it is that it's an old game with old graphics, display and sound.

If you need those things to enjoy a game don't buy, but if you can still enjoy good old style games it fits the bill.

Me too. I'm about 20% through "The British are Coming" and it's well done.

I'm interested in a computer game version that's worthy of the conflict, so thanks for bringing up this thread.

Same here..

Since the American colonists at the time of Paul Revere's ride considered themselves to be British, I think that their cry would be more like "The Regulars are coming!"

While at one time they may have felt that way, the years immediately before the revolution saw a deterioration in the relationship for a variety of reasons. At the time of Revere's ride, there was a majority mistrust in the motives of the crown and colonists increasingly identified themselves as something other than "British" in the classic sense of the word. Once blood was shed at Lexington and Concord, this trend accelerated dramatically.

Yeah, you're right. I guess my point was that, after Lexington and Concord, a general mistrust or Gentlemen's disagreement flipped overnight to unrepressed rage. A lot changed in that one day/night.

All it takes is one little thing to slightly irritate some people, then they go all irrational. The British did a little more than to slightly irritate the New Englanders.

For any game about this war to be truly accurate it has to feature the brave Revolutionaries capturing the English airports....

If there was to be a new ARW game produced I'd like to see it include the efforts by the Dutch, French and Spain in the war also the possibility of other nations entering the war besides France.
