This is the current victory point total in a game I'm playing. I don't think I'm winning. But this looks like I need to find 1800 victory points, or there-a-bouts, just for a draw.
Am I reading that right?






And if that is true, then calling that a marginal defeat by the scenario designer is just plain nice.

You need 427 points to get into the draw category (1168 - 427 = 741).

The Victory pane shows who is currently winning the Scenario. This is determined by summing the Friendly Held Objectives value, minus the Enemy Held Objectives value, plus the Enemy Loss Penalty, minus the Friendly Loss Penalty, plus the Net Victory Point Award.

That's what I thought.
It looks like I'm at -1168. That's different than +1168.
I'm not sure there are that many victory points on the whole board. I will have to look and add them up manually.

Yes, but he asked how far to a DRAW. He only needs to get to -741 for that.

To get to a MARGINAL VICTORY, he needs to get to positive 742. He needs 1168 + 742 = 1910 to get to there.

Isn't there a difference between -741 and +741?
And that's a HUGE difference between draw and marginal victory.



As a matter of fact, looking at it again, I believe it sais I should be at a draw now. Because a draw is LESS THAN or equal to +741.
I'm at -1168. So that is definitely less than 741 and makes it a draw somehow.

Well, that's not at all what the thing says. Its says less than or equal to 741 [that's a positive number positive] for a Draw.

You have to think of the absolute value of the numbers.

A value of -1168 for you is 1168 for the enemy. That's why it's a Marginal Defeat: It's a Marginal Victory for the enemy.

So if that's the case then all I need to do is subtract 1168-741=427.
So where it stands now, I need 427pts to get a marginal defeat to a draw.
And I can ignore the rest.

Furthermore you must remember something else.
You don't need 427 points.
If you take 214 objectives points, these will be removed from your enemy.

Which, by looking at the map is not impossible.
Its a Market Garden scenario. So I'm the Allies. The scenario is divided into 6hr turns over ten days. Its early morning on the 6th day, so we are just over half, and I'm almost linked up at Nijmegen. I have lost Arnhem though and that's 100pts by itself. The way the scenario is built, unless the Allies get through Arnhem and capture victory points north of the Rhine, a draw is as good as it gets.
That's fair though. The object of market garden was to get 21st Army group north of Arnhem and into Germany. If the objective isn't met then the plan didn't work. I don't think that should be counted as a win.
Its hard for me to see a way to get a win as the Allies in this scenario actually. I'm starting to think the whole thing was a bad idea from the start.
I might be able to eek out a draw at this point by finishing encirclement's though. And I'm definitely not losing Nijmegen over the next four days.

In other words. I knew I was losing, but it didn't look like I was losing as bad as that victory point panel was saying. I didn't think.
Any other ways to improve the math?

Write ten numbers on different colored pieces of paper and put them all in a paper bag. Shake up the bag and remove one number, if the number is blue, then remove two more number and throw all three away. Take the bag with the remaining numbers and crunch it up and put it in your mom's purse. When she finds it and opens it up if the first number she pulls out is 17, then divide by 1/2 and multiple that by your ability to concentrate at this point [remember, that's an absolute value from 1-12]. If you have less than three you win, more than 7 you lose, all other results are a Draw.
