Respawn and rename ability

I'm doing a scen mod, please help me out on how to set in the editor to make sure no respawn occurs for sunk CVs and CAs?
Also please let me know what is the way to set the US still to be available ship's names to editable format, that would help a lot.

Edit - OK figured out the renaming: you have to add II after the ship's name

There is no respawn.
Late war ships that were named for early war ships that were historically sunk can be renamed by the player in case the original ship is not sunk in their game and they don't want duplicate ships with the same names

Respawn is set in the editor here:
Most scenarios do not have it set on, if fact I know of none.
It is not real obvious, but it is in the Scenario tab.

I'm playing an earlier version of NikMod GC and indeed it has respawn, my sunk CVs came back, same class as sunk.

Sort of same subject, i did not found a way to rename a Japanese ship when it converts, is it possible.?

I'm not really an expert on this but I guess rename option after conversion per se is not available in the editor. However adding the "II" (roman numeral 2) to the name and manually renaming when the conversion is done might work.

If respawn is on do old US CVs come back as the same class, e.g. Hornet II is a "Yorktown" or Essex class? Likewise on the old cruisers as "Baltimore" or "Cleveland"'s?

It is amazing what you can find in the manual.
16.1.1 AUTOMATIC SHIP REPLACEMENTS
There are several instances in which replacement ships may be provided as reinforcements
if a ship is sunk during the game. Replacement ships are generated if the option is selected
for the scenario and:
An American CV is sunk prior to 1944 will be replaced by an Essex-class CV.
An American or Australian CA that is sunk prior to 1944 will be replaced by a Baltimore-class
CA or a Cleveland-class CL. The replacement class is chosen at random.
Japanese Midget Submarines will be replaced with a Type “D” Midget Submarine
Whenever a replacement ship is created, it will be placed in the reinforcement list and given an
arrival time of at least 450 days from the date the original ship was sunk.

Also, if ship replacements is switched "on" then the rename function (which only works in the reinforcement queue) is switched off.
Incidentally, if a ship has a II name and you change it and remove the II, you can change it again later. So I infer that the 'II' sets a flag on that data base line when you load the scenario.

Where can you rename ships? I've played this game since its inception and I've never heard or noticed this...

It's a rather limited ability. But during the game as the Allied player you can rename any ship with the Roman number "II" after it. The ship's name will be displayed in yellow instead of white. Just click on the yellow text and give it any name you please. You have to do this in the ship reinforcement menu before the ship's arrival date or you're stuck with ***** II. I think this was included because having a Hornet and a Hornet II would be kinda redundant if the original Hornet didn't sink. However, whether the original ship(s) have sunk doesn't matter. You can still change the name in-game. Works for subs and cruisers with a "II" as well.

Instead of getting Baltimore/Clevelands, I'm getting New Orleans class replacements. Were there certain slots in the Ships section of the scenario that were reserved for the respawned cruisers and carriers? WitP classic provided Baltimore/Clevelands, but AE is behaving differently for me.

Replacements will come in as the same class as the original, making it pretty useless as a function.

Thanks! So the way to go is with the USS xxxx II to cover the new hull as the reinforcement and just rename the ship as required if the game play fails to sink the original. That makes sense.

You don’t have to have a ship sink or not sink to rename them.
The ships with the II behind were being built anyway.
You don’t have to include the II.
In many cases I will rename a ship under construction for a
pilot who was KIA or MIA.
This is how in my current game the CV Randall got it’s name
from ENS Randall who went missing in action.

During WW2, US CVs and CVLs were named according to famous naval ships and battles, including those in WW2. CVEs were named after "sounds, bays, island, and famous battles." The post-war FDR was the first notable exception to that. Shangri-La was at least an allusion to the Doolittle Raid given that Roosevelt jokingly said that the raiders had launched from Shangri-La. Refloating some famous names from US naval history could include: Constellation, United States, President, Chesapeake, Lawrence, Niagara, Monitor, Hartford, Congress, Cumberland, Olympia, etc. Constitution is still commissioned in Boston Harbor. If your taste runs to the Civil War there are an almost endless set of battles for namesakes: Shiloh, Gettysburg, Hampton Roads, Appomattox, Mobile Bay, etc.
Destroyers and destroyer escorts were typically named for deceased servicemen (USN and Marine Corps). I'm not sure if it extended to USCG or merchant mariners.
The root of my concern on this is that the early Essex class carriers were originally authorized with one set of names but the Independence CVL program poached a lot of the names and more were taken as sunken carriers were brought back in their Essex incarnation. So I was just trying to hold as close to the original naming conventions as possible, e.g. the Wasp II (CV-18) was originally going to be the Oriskany. The historical Oriskany (CV-34) picked up her name. With the great slow down in US warship construction late in the war, the Oriskany took over six years from her keel-laying to commissioning.
