Meeting engagement and air support and other things?

First Meeting engagement. How come the enemy had nearly all the map so it was more like a normal attack?
Also Air support is useless. One strafe that always misses. Pretty pointless.
Oh and blast radius of heavy arty seems low. Had enemy mortar unit in the midst and straight after carried on firing as usual.
Next when taking the defend choice how come you start right back on the map as if you hadn't previously taken all objectives? I get it should have some space for the enemy but not that much. Maybe give it one objective to start from.
What benefit is there to keep on defending and not choose the counter attack options? WHy would you want to rush into hasty counter attacks?
Please take a look at the moral. Honestly I can't take it anymore:) Seriously that and we're doomed is driving me nuts. High moral troops running away constantly. I tried doing a mass assault on one objective took objective though 3/4 of my units ran off..the rest not long after. Was left with no one. Seriously you really can't attack the way the moral system is. Not sure how the beta testers hadn't noticed this.

Which meeting engagement and how did it occur? As a result of a counter-attack? At Gum Tree Road?
Defend means stay on the current map and wait for the enemy to attack again. So yes, they need some space to deploy and there needs to be some neutral ground. If you choose to Defend the enemy gets ~1/4 of the map to start off in, which is typically less than the initial setup.
You might want to Hasty Counter-Attack if you want to seize the initiative. When you get a counter-attack chance AND you counter attack before the enemy resumes the attack you get the initiative and become the attacker. If you don't care about seizing the initiative then you're generally better off staying on Defend.
Strafing aircraft (P-40, Me-109) are mostly useful to suppress enemy infantry. They can take out lightly armored vehicles but it's hit or miss. Bomb and rocket armed aircraft can take out vehicles or tanks.
Some tips if you are having men break a lot:
Keep men in cover and try to limit the amount of fire you take while moving. Men taking fire while moving in the open suffer more stress. If you need to cross open ground do it in short rushes (Fast move order for ~30m or so) and pause in between to let the troops go prone and recover for a second. Or you can use the Move order and they will move by individual bounds when under fire and try to use cover along the way.
Alternate moving units so the enemy switches fire to different targets and the other(s) can move without being focused on by multiple enemies. Units that aren't moving can fire at the enemy to suppress them and give cover fire for moving units. Also have an HQ unit follow the attack and try and keep units that might be wavering in the HQ command radius.
Don't bunch up your units. The more men in an area the more men at risk from any given burst of machine gun fire. The worst thing to do is bunch up your men into a tight mass -- every enemy who can will shoot into the group and the effect of their fire is multiplied.
Finally, if you've been playing the campaign for a while check out the Soldier Screen stats. Soldiers that rout in a battle take a fairly big morale hit and won't hold up well if you order them to do it again and again. They can recover morale by getting kills, or being in a winning battle, without breaking or routing.

It was Sidi meeting engagement. I chose a dawn attack.
I do think though if chosing to defend on a map you just took all objectives then the enemy shoulkd start the attack from a bigger disadvantage than if it's the first time defending on the map. As I said maybe just give them the closest objective and just a corner of the map. Having to defend the map right back as if it's the first time on the map feels unfair.
I didn't know move order has your men move forward in bounds.
As for moral. I can start a map after choosing units with nothing less than high moral, yet have them run and break after the first rounds are fired. Honestly it's crippling the game currently. Running away or going berserk as I've said before should be rare not the norm. I can count on my hand how many times I saw a man go berserk in the old CC games. It was a rare event that made you sit up..now it's just a standard thing.

Are you swapping out units after engagements? You need to be rotating units out, otherwise your core units will break like that specifically because of no rest.

Always rotate your squads, this helps with morale. Check the "Soldier" screen after each battle to determine which squads to rotate. Look for the act of cowardice icons (running man), to help determine which squads to rotate out. Also, check the any casualties of your Platoon Leaders to make sure the senior NCO or Officer didn't bit the bullet. That will affect your platoons' morale as well.

I do this..though really soldiers in a squad rated as well trained and has high moral shouldn't start shouting I can't take anymore after a shell or two. Said it before this is really crippling the game, esp when trying to attack. This could also be the reason why the Germans seem passive on attack. It's because the soldiers will break before it really gets going.
Is the rate of moral drop moddable? Maybe someone could mod infantry to be abit more thick skinned.

I have see that in this version the soldiers have a little more tendency to acts of covardice perhaps because the unit haven't experience in combat but in general I like the upper moral bar more than older versions.
I have see that after a barrage the moral of my units increase speedly.
