The fine art of self-bombardment

Kinda like Milo Minderbender in Catch-22, I ordered the bombardment of a friendly controlled base by a friendly TF (the base was beseiged by enemy ground units). From the Combat Reply, it looked like the enemy ground units took casualties but also a friendly AP (already damaged) in port was sunk
Anyone else tried this? Outcomes? Am I really damaging the enemy units around the base?

Hi, Are you sure it was sunk by the gunfire? It might have sunk on it's own (how bad was it damaged prior to the attack)
Can you post the combat text?

I also tried to bombard my own base beseiged by enemy. I set the bombardment TF 'do not retire.' It bombarded my own port and airfield during night turn and bombarded enemy troops during day turn. Why did it happen?

It is quite possible it sunk on its own merit..it was a small port and the AP had 95% + flotation damage.

I know that bombardment TFs actually -can- damage ships in port, enemy at least, and it -does- show up in the combat.txt. Knavey had sent one of his nightly bombardment TFs to Port Moresby. Naturally, he shot the place the up, and in in the combat.txt is reported that my resident seaplane tender had taken a hit. And true enough, my AV was there with 20 system damage the next day.
