The movie "The Final Countdown" was an excellent example of speculative fiction about naval warfare and has spawned countless debates all over the internet about what would happen if such-and-such a modern warship was shifted back to World War 2. However, I doubt that many people ever wondered what would happen if a Soviet Kiev-class aviation cruiser was shifted back to face a Nazi air force and navy that is firmly in its decline in 1944 and has its priorities elsewhere what with a small amphibious landing taking place on the beaches of Normandy, a rather significant bombing campaign flattening their cities especially with new fighter escorts shooting down their interceptors in droves, and U-boats being lost to Allied forces left and right. Indeed it would totally be interesting to see what would happen if a futuristic Soviet task force shows up off the coast of f'ing Finland to have an epic curb stomp match way out in the weeds where no one can notice the effects.[/sarcasm] Adding to this mess is the fact that there are no clear objectives, no scoring criteria, and no victory conditions. It's just a f'ing arena match that has absolutely no point whatsoever and I got to be honest, a smart commander would just radio Moscow explaining the situation and asking for orders, and then head for the nearest Soviet Port once the request for orders is inevitably denied because the guys he's calling think that this is clearly some sort of sick prank. And this is the same guy who made that mess "Breaking Belbek", I'm honestly beginning to think that the numerals in his alias stand for his age.
