Can anyone give me some advice on how to use the British Aircraft carriers effectively?

Keep them away from the Axis land based planes - as first thing. Remember their TACs have 10 of range - unless you have your own air cover.
They can interdict ports at 4 of distance and think intercept other navies at some similar distance, maybe 6 hexes.

I've seen Allied CVs go in pair or triplets with some escorts to be on the safe side if a surface combat happens, used in conservative-offensive way to interdict ports or use carrier strikes to support land advances in North Afrika.
