Friend or Foe? How do you know?

Is there a simple command for a unit to check the identity of a contact? ie. Friend or foe without manually flying the plane/ship/helo over to it?

You can get this kind of behaviour by using a strike mission with no targets assigned and setting the 'activate when contact is' to 'unknown', this means the units assigned will investigate unknown contacts to ID them without opening fire--presuming the WCS is set to TIGHT.
You could also set WCS to HOLD and auto-attack using F1. The relevant unit will move to the targeted contact and stay within close proximity.

So this is how the Bears are set for MPA missions in North Inferno? I was wondering how to keep them at stand off distance but still tracking.

I recommend to also limit the attack speed of the aircraft in such a mission. Otherwise the scrambled unit will use Afterburner, most often not intended by me. I typically set the attack speed to cruise for such an investigation mission, at least if there is enough distance & time after the detection of the unknown unit.

Depending on the scenario, you can sometimes make educated guesses and manually mark them as hostile.
Contacts flying in pairs at high speed for examples could be hostiles.
