Convoy Escort Question

Looking over the map when I toggle on the convoy button at the top of the screen I can see the paths all convoys take for all countries. In certain situations when I try to place escorts in certain locations, I get the message that I don't have any escorts in a particular sea area. That makes me think (correct me if I'm wrong) that only certain countries are using those lanes, for example England in the early part of the war is using the North Atlantic while France is not. I can see from the little escort icons in the convoy escort dialog which country has escorts in a particular location so I'm assuming those are the only routes that are being used for a particular country. The pic below seems to tell me that England is using only the North Atlantic, South Atlantic Pan American Zone, African Coast and Caribbean Sea as convoy routes.

Is there a benefit of turning off the unused routes? I think I'm missing something?

Here is comparing France and England. Once again I am assuming that the escort icons to the right of the route are the convoy routes active for that particular country. So I guess I am also asking is if my assumption is correct?

You can only place escorts in zones you have convoys running through. The boat icon on far right tells you that you have resources going through.

But if allies share a zone all their escorts help each other

Thanks for the response. Is there a benefit then to toggling off a route if it is not being used?
