Reports on mine hits

In the past, people have complained that we should not be seeing messages when a enemy sweeps a mine field and when one of their ships hits a mine, regardless of who laid the mine. Have those rules changed in this current version?

The reason I'm asking is because of something that recently happened in my game with Drex, he's the Allies. He laid a mine feild at Nevea, one of my bases. Since I only run Fast Transports of destroyers into the place and they were not getting hit, I left the mine field be.

Recently I saw one of his bombardment forces go into the hex and a report of a DD hitting a mine. I did'nt think much of it until in e-mail a little later Drex complained that the South Dakota had hit a mine there at Nevea (he forgot he mined the place, I guess) and had to go back to Pearl with 40 sys damage!

Needless to say, I was confused because I never SAW a message of the South Dakota hitting a mine -- when in previous versions EVERY ship that was hit was reported and it was always accurate.

Any idea here?

I doubt that. Drex is a honest player when it comes to matters like this. We often report our losses after a battle is over. He was complaing in the same note how he does'nt really like the South Dakota class and was hoping that by sending her back he'd get the Mass and three other new battleships in Pearl, so that adds even more weight of crediability to it. In fact, he even encourged me to post this note! :D

It's interesting that we would get fog of war in damage reports from mining. Usually this information is culled from radio intercepts - informing HQ that such and such vessels are returning due to mine damage. I suppose the fog would be in determining which of the ships returning are the damaged ones, but I don't see any intelligence officer believing that the South Dakota was escorting a damaged DD...

This is why I don't complain about reports on mine damage. It does seem that at some point the returning ships will have to radio their movement to the base, if only to prevent being attacked on return.

I think that mine hits are subject to FOW just like everything else. For instance, one of my enemy's S-boats just sunk after, apparently, being hit by one of my ASW planes a number of turns back. I was surprised to see the sinking message because I didn't have any reports that my planes had actually hit any thing, just that they were attacking.

The reason, I believe, the designers put in the notifications about mine hits and mine sweeping, etc. into the combat replay is so that players would have an idea as to why things were happening, or that they actually were happening. For instance, it would be disconcerting not to see the mine sweeping message. How would you know that your mine sweepers were actually doing their job?

The only way around this dilemna of providing information about what is happening during the turn, yet preserving FOW would be to have two seperate combat replays, one for the Japs and one for the Americans. I don't see that happening anytime soon, if ever due to the amount of code I am sure it would require.

We, the Beta team, were not notified of any changes but I have noticed the same thing. I play the US and use mines extensively. I was disappointed that they were not having the desired effect ( I keep waiting for the report) when I noticed 4 of the enemy's ships showed up on the sunk list as sunk by mines. Never saw one report.

It makes sense that I would have the report of my own ship hitting a mine (especially my mine:mad: ) and even more so that the opponent wouldn't see it if the mine hit was a distance away from port. A mine explosion 20-30 miles out certainly wouldn't be seen, maybe heard.

A number of times with 2.3 there have been reports of one of my ships hitting a mine, but when I check the unit I find no mine damage. I have also seen a couple of cases where damage is incurred but I never saw a report in the replay. FOW is definitely in play here.
