New to the game and loving it!

When comparing the stats for breakthrough and heavy armor 39 I see no difference in stats? What is the difference?

Also how do you upgrade units? Is it automatic?

Heavy Armor has more tanks a slightly higher defense values as you research. Whereas, Breakthrough has an additional operation point added. Note, these techs are for mech and armor units only. So once you research them upgrades will occur automatically if you have the production points. I only really research Heavy Armor.

What screen is that? In these screens I see no difference in stats?

Basically heavy armor didn't exist early. Correct me if I am wrong but the Pz V was the 1st heavy armor. Even the T-34 wasn't considered heavy but a medium tank.

Once you get into 1942/1943 Technically tigers and heavier tanks show up.

Heavy armour was around at the start for some nations. The French had heavy armour. The Russians had the KV tanks.

Thus why France has 1940 heavy tanks in 1939 with +1 tanks and +1 defense.

But put a Panther vs it? It's like a knife through warm butter.

So is there any reason to build a 39 heavy tank then? I guess you can still upgrade it?

WarPlan is half strategic planning and half logistics.

Upgrades are done automatically as research advances. To hurry upgrades, after reaching higher tech, you can set the unit to have high priority in upgrades. So yes, you purchase '39 heavies, and as the years progress, they will eventually upgrade and be ever more powerful, assuming you assign enough of your production pool to upgrades. Or you can wait till you have the higher tech and purchase new heavys at the higher level.

By how the game is, one does not have any need to build extra Breakthrough armour except maybe Italy.

Why? Italy starts with 2 Breakthrough units, and with its economy, they're as precious as they're. So may as well tech directly Breakthrough and maybe build another or so later on.

Germany starts with Breakthrough units - 2 of them - and that's pretty much it. Heavy Armour is so neatly superior to Breakthrough that Germany can tech Breakthrough as long as they've excess points - but the extra punch / defence so vastly outweight -1- single extra action points that's not worth it.

Allies have easier life, they can just forget entirely of the existance of Breakthrough - and just go Heavy Armour and smile at it.

The Tiger was a true heavy tank. The Panther is considered by many as the best medium tank of the war.

The Tiger was Pz VI, the Panther Pz V.

Would be nice to add a reliability factor in with Breakthrough(light/medium tanks) vs the Unreliable Factor with Heavy Tanks.

Bigger they got the easier they sunk in mud, the more breakdowns they had and the more gas they guzzled. I know that's a bit micro but it would give a reason to continue to build Medium Tanks later into the war.
