I am about to purchase TOAW and I have a friend across the pond who I'd like to play against via PBEM. My question is, can one select the Germans and one the Americans and avoid the inclusion of Russia? I understand that the AI can handle other countries, but if we wanted to simulate what the war might have been like had the Germans not attack the Soviet Union thereby bringing them into the conflict.

TOAW scenarios all have just two sides. That doesn't mean that the scenario designer can't render some of one side's forces unusable via deployment modes or house rules, though. But that is up to those designers.

Sounds like you want to play a full ETO scenario. There are several, but how they handle that issue is up to them.

Of course, you can always make your own (or mod an existing) scenario however you like.

The scene "Invasion Amerika" is a German / Japanese v. America on US soil, pretty fun, but is hampered by lack of German air transport points for the couple of airborne German divisions, and is (too me) a bit "clunky" b/c of the need to sea float the Germans around so much.

I think it is based on the old board game, not sure. You might give that one a try, is an AAR about my game w/ a chap recently.

Campaign for North Africa is also a fun scene, w/ different variations / starting points of it, also based on an SPI game. It is mostly Brits v. Germans, but no Russians.
