How convertible are the maps?

Am busy designing a map for a WW1-syle mod, but I want to know if there is an easy way of converting the map for use with WIE/WAW?

I guess if it came right down to it I could probably simply convert my map to an image file and then use the map reader app to convert it (though that would inevitably lead to mis-aligned coastlines).

You can use the export function. With the campaign open, go to File -> Export Data

This should be covered in the Manual if you search for Export Data, and it will enable you to export those aspects that will work in either engine (not everything will, but the map itself should be fine) from one to the other.

Many thanks Bill, you're right - I should have checked the manual. Glad to see that the work I do on this can also be used for WIE

I am working on a WW1-mod for 'SC-WW2:World at War'. Map is done, units in progress.
Could i transfer this to 'SC:WW1' without problems? Is it the same editor?
I don't want to do the whole events&scripts-stuff from scratch [:(]

The editor looks pretty much identical and you can see a few obvious carry-overs from WW2 in the game files - I'd suggest loading the scenario file in the ww1 editor and seeing if anything odd happens.

It should be possible to transfer the map, using the export then import functions, but if you include the units then some things may not work, so I would just export the map and create the rest in the relevant Editor.

Hi,
I got a question. Is it possible to open a jpg, or image file in editor? Or i need to convert it into dedicated file extension first? I am designing my own map now, and i want to upload a historical map(in picture format) into editor, then set the desired map size, put grid on and then start "coloring" it using editor tools to make it playable map. Anybody can tell me how to open a picture in editor? I tried to import data, but program doesn't recognize jpg files.

Hi Jazon,
You won't be able to add the picture directly into the editor. Instead what you can do is download a hex grid from the internet (or just make one) and overlay it onto your map in paint.net/gimp/photoshop. Then just mark each hex as you add them so you don't lose track of what you've done.

The Panzer Corps game editor has a feature like this but (AFAIK) this game does not. TBH I thought about doing things this way (i.e., plotting everything out on a grid first) but in the end it seemed to create more work than it saved, since there are no actual maps that have both the size and the level of detail that I needed for my mod. Best thing is just to be systematic about how you do it and continually sense-check your placings.

I designed the War in Europe map using a grid, and while you're right about the detail, I did find it very useful in terms of getting all the main features in the right place, as I added coordinates to the grid that matched what was in the campaign.

After that it is a case of comparing multiple maps and using your judgement, but it did help a lot.
