Objective Tracks

Normally a formation will move towards objectives sequentially, that is objective 1, 2, 3 and so on. The exception is that if an objective is in a friendly controlled hex the formation will skip that objective and instead move toward the first objective located in an enemy controlled hex. Friendly controlled objectives are ignored by OWPI.

In a scenario design I want to use objective tracks 2 thru 5 as alternatives in which some of the alternatives make flanking maneuvers thru friendly territory. As a work around I can artificially change ownership of the friendly held objective hexes, but that becomes messy and formation movements can unintentionally change ownership of hexes needed by other formations.

Is there a better way to force formations to move thru friendly territory using a designated track?

Regards

Hi Mr. Bones - I tried in Autumn Fog but was unsuccessful. I've taken to using zig-zagging tracks, that way there is some lateral movement at times.

That’s the answer I expected, but not the one I wanted. Thanks, you’ve confirmed my suspicion.

I have also not had much luck with that kind of PO maneuver. We really need a way that will force the formation to follow a given path, friendly or enemy, without exception.

sPzAbt653, Raindem. I posted a change request under the “TOAW IV features” thread. Please take a look and see if my wording adequately defines the problem.

Best Regards

Zig-Zag vs Direct Line to Objective.

If I recall in early TOAW versions it was recommended to use the zig-zag approach, and indeed most of the earlier scenarios did this.

Then in a later version of TOAWIII, Elmer was upgraded to be more aware of his flanks, and the direct approach was recommended.

In my scenarios, I used the direct approach.

I am not sure I have seen a head-to-head trial of the two approaches. It would be interesting if someone could take a look...

HI Rob - Hope all is well there and that you are staying safe from culprit-19. Something tells me you are a survivor!

There is another part to the Elmer Flank Equation. I can't remember exactly, but if Objectives are 4 or less, or 3 or less, hexes apart, Elmer's units watch their flanks closely. I remember this because it caused me to redo all of D21's objectives many years ago.

Are there any tutorials available concerning PO tracks, relevant events, etc. ? Although I know how to put objective tracks down, there seems more to it than just 1-2-3.

Cheers

I found an Elmer Assist PDF in my manuals directory. In case you don't have it I'm attaching it here below. Just remove the ".txt" from the filename. I had to name it that way so I could attach it here.

Thanks, Steve.

I remember that greater than 3 invokes Elmer to guard his flanks.

The Elmer Assist is a useful tool I use it a lot so I can focus on a Schwerpunkt and let the many minor actions continue under the control of the local commanders.

The instructions are complete but appear more complicated than they really are.
