Checking for Updates Fails

Ran the Check for Updates on Warplan this morning. The dialog that pops up saying "Checking for Updates" spend a few minutes trying to create a Handle then "Error: Update information for WarPlan could not be downloaded. Please contact Matrix Games for Help."

Is this suppose to be working now?

I have no errors. You can also manually download the update from your account.

Restart the program or reboot the PC. Start with that.

Make sure all instances are closed in task manager

WarPlan's updater has never worked for me either. Same error, using Win10 Pro. No other instances of Warplan showing in Task Manager.

If you have security software it could be interfering. Make sure you don't have 2 installed by accident. Many people do and it causes all sorts of problems. Usually Microsoft's and McAfee which causes a mess.

Try reinstalling

Either way you can manually download the patches.

That check for updates hasn't worked for years for me amd many others. It doesn't matter what game you try to use it for. This has come up so many times in the past but nothing changes. Years ago Matrix support tried to help me with this but nothing worked. I always update with the link Daniele puts in the update announcement post.

I am only using Windows Defender. After manually updating, the updater was able to run and tell me I am up to date! Too bad I already knew that.

Did some testing. Updater had same crash for Fantasy General II. Told me Decisive Campaigns Blue and Advanced Tactics Gold were up to date. Actually ran and updated Field of Glory Empires. Also ran for Operational Art of War IV but I didn't have a new enough version to update it.

Try turning off Defender. Also try looking at what is installed on your PC. McAfee has a way of sneaking on your PC when you update other applications.

For example Adobe Acrobat LOOOVES installing McAfee on your PC.
Others install Avast or Anti-Malwarebytes or another brand.

That is similar to my experience. Sometimes for some games it fails, but it isn't consistent. I used updater with War Plan yesterday evening and it worked fine. But I know it's failed sporadically on other games in the past. I've never been able to find a definitive cause.

It might be also an ISP issue. Sometimes they do traffic shaping with download/upload from FTP servers.

Update is still failing when trying on 72. Since this use to work through version 6, I suspect it is something on Matrix's side since nothing has changed on my PC in years. It did download an update to the update server software before failing to download 72.

I started using the Steam link available for your Matrix/Slitherine games in your My Games on the website. Steam keeps the game updated (072 now) with the official patch. To use beta fixes you'll have to apply yourself.
