Non-historical scenarios

Having played most of the scenarios by now; from both sides, using different difficulty settings, making all thinkable changes in strategies, I have come to the point where there's no longer any situation to play that hasn't been played several times before.

Solution: Editor.

After some hesitation, I ventured into the realm of changing things–changing them a lot. I wanted a new set-up. Not altering some combat values or changing the OOB or likewise. Totally new.

Some posts had made me somewhat wary when it came to the editor, and when I finally got into it, I was expecting it would give me a good fight. But not so. It was very easy to figure out, possibly because I've learned some of the settings the hard way when fiddling with Strategic Command.

So I made an East-West conflict without any connection to historical context. Germany, USSR, Finland, Hungary, Turkey and Spain was turned into the Eastern block, with UK, France USA, Canada and the major part of the remaining lesser nations as the Allies. Then I started with all these countries at war.

New situation, new positions, new thinking. It became all very fresh. Instead of walking the old roads, there were new paths to try, hitherto unknown territory to explore. And a lot of fun so far.

I won't go on more about it now–I prefer to go back to playing–but must strongly recommend this to anyone that, like me, are balancing on the edge where you're still loving the game, but being a bit tired of the repetitions from the historical start-up.

Try the editor. Make new situations, even totally a-historical ones. The game has still very much to offer.

Would you be willing to post your scenario in the mods section?

It's not really a proper scenario, so I shouldn't post it as such; people may be misled into thinking it has all valid scipts and all. But I could throw up a link here.

Before that, I must adress a minor issue, however. The Russian sub flotilla behaved in most respect as a proper Axis formation, attacking the North Atlantic trade immediately. But then it went on to the Persian Gulf hex, firmly lodging itself there. It took me the better half of a year to remove it with attacks from carriers. Seems the sub is aware of it being Axis, but with the allowance of entering the hex as being Allied. Once there, it's Axis again and can't move on to the Middle East. Also, the South Atlantic trade remained empty after the sub's demise.

Quickest solution is to just remove it, I suppose, and hope that the AI doesn't build a new one. But I must look into it and check why there's no trade getting through.

Made a quick look now, before scurrying off to work. Trade leaves Middle East, but don't enter the South Atlantic. It wasn't the sub. My changing allegiances might have something to do with it. Check it tonight.

Alvaro: Why, it's my own, of course. I update it regularilly at my fancy. [:)]

GW: I intended to fix the broken UK convoy, but while trying to figure out how to set-up a convoy I did something stupid, and the whole scenario became corrupted. Must go back to an earlier version and re-make the other changes. The brits will have to do without those resources.

I have now played up to the point where Turkey, Spain, Hungary and, lastly, Germany have been defeated. I was expecting the normal "Germany surrender" upon taking all brown hexes. To my utter surprise, I was instead informed that "The German government has gone into exile". And the krauts are still in the fight.

As a commander this was of course disappointing–the Russians are massing at the borders by now–but as a gamer I was delighted. It proves that the game continue to "think" beyond the abyss of German surrender.

Germany finally surrendered. The Allies–with troops from USA, UK, France, Canada and Sweden–are seen to prepare for the invasion of the USSR. For all what it may seem, there's going to be a piece of cake.
