Heavy artillery.

From my understanding specialties take effect immediately. I put heavy artillery on an infantry unit and attacked a hex. It said entrenchment two before the attack and then two after the attack. Shouldn't it have been dropped to one?
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

It's doesn't reduce it as take it off the map. It reduces it only during the attack.

So if a defender is a 2, now he is a 1 for the attack

Another question, if a unit with this specialty can attack more than once in the turn, will the -1 apply to each attack or only the first attack?
Thanks again.

I found the answer to my question by looking at combat logs. The -1 will apply to every attack. I'm thinking that a Mechanized Corps with lots of operation points might be a good unit on which to try this specialty.

Good idea, I think, although for attacking rugged terrain / fortifications maybe a high experience Infantry large corps be better?

Everything depends.

So if you have a unit with Heavy Artillery it affects the entire combat.
A single unit with elite experience only affects itself.
The engineer bonus is worth more than the experience but is only used in specific situations.
The anti-tank's benefit is lower retreat, more tank damage, even though it might not increase firepower as much as elite experience.

I try to balance each of the specialties so you can't min-max it. The scenarios apply dynamically of when to use what unit.

Like has already been said it does not actually reduce the entrenchment level. In effect, think of it as ignoring one level rather than reducing the level by one.

I have 2 good American Infantry corps, each with heavy artillery attached, attacking a fortified German Infantry corps unit with 2 entrenchment. In theory this should negate the 2 entrenchment because of the two heavy artillery bonuses yes? I have attacked this unit for 3 turns in a row and can't dislodge it even with close air support. The AV of the German corps barely goes down and my guys get beat up each turn attacking. Hopefully the heavy arty is working like I think it is.

Only 1 Heavy Artillery bonus applies per attack. Jim D Burns gave me some great ideas about its' use in the War Room in my Specialties thread.

Ah, that's too bad, but I can see why. For this style of game it would probably be to overpowered to have both bonuses apply.

The specialties are small modifiers not death stars.
