Windows update stuffed WiE editor

I am posting a Windows issue here in the hope that someone has a solution for WiE.

Since the latest Windows update, I cannot save any files in WiE including the cgn I am working on. I have searched the interwebs and see that it is a common enough issue but none of the solutions have so far worked. Even changing the attributes of the file in the administrator command have not helped, even though the files are now not RO.

Any thoughts or experience with this would be appreciated. Thanks.

Pretty much a wits-end now. I cannot use the editor on my PC anymore as nothing can be saved. I have a laptop that I can edit my campaign with, transferring the same campaign via OneDrive - works fine on the LT and opens on the PC but cannot save any changes there. I have checked that I am an Administrator on both and I am. I have checked my AVG virus settings and all sorts of Windows settings. I have trawled the internet and tried suggestions. I have uninstalled WiE from Steam and reinstalled it. There is no option to put it in a different folder or I would have tried that, too.

On the PC, if I open the campaign and Save As, a folder is created in the Campaigns folder but no cgn or dat is created.

I just don't get it and don't have any more hair to pull out. If anyone has any pointers, please do share them. :)

I'm far from an expert but that never stopped me

1) troubleshoot windows update

2) drivers?

3) go back to old version of windows

4) ask in windows forum

Sorry to hear about the trouble. What exactly happens when you click to confirm the Save? Do you get an error message? Does it just close the Save As window?

What is the exact path of the Campaigns folder you are attempting to save to?

e.g. is it something like this:

C:\Users\<username>\Documents\My Games\Strategic Command WWII - War in Europe\Campaigns

Hi Hubert. Yes, that is the folder structure.

When I press Save, there is no error message, however, the save button remains 'active' (?) whereas it normally goes grey when the save has occurred. So, for example, if I add a weather zone and click Save, nothing happens but I am asked if I want to save when I exit, indicating no save has occurred. Going back into the campaign confirms that the (weather zone) is not there.

It's some sort of permissions issue, I'm sure because it happens with WaW, too. The files are not RO but the folders are. There is also a difference between what I see in folder permissions as Administrator on the PC and my LT. On the laptop, I can see the blue and yellow shield next to options but not on the PC, although my account clearly says Administrator.

In fairness to Windows, both it and AVG were updated on the weekend when the problem started. :)

Hi El Condoro,

What it could then be is AVG related more than anything else. A lot of anti virus software now provides an option to "protect" certain documents folders from changes and what could be happening here is that AVG has been set to protect your documents folders and not allow applications such as the SC editors to make these changes.

I would look into this as I feel this is likely the issue then and is typically resolved by giving permission to the Editor EXEs or maybe whitelisting the EXEs from AVG etc.

Your anti-virus software should have more info on this either on the web or within the app itself.

Hope this helps,
Hubert

You're a genius!

I went into AVG, which I had looked at since the weekend, and a new ransomware protector feature was shown. I went into that and unprotected my Documents folder (I'm sure I could go more granular, too) and voila! my campaign can be saved.

Thank you so much. Now I can continue designing on my main computer.

Oh, and apologies to Microsoft. :)
