Industry News: Matrix Games to Publish Korsun Pocket in May

On Wednesday wargames publisher Matrix Games announced further details on its upcoming Korsun Pocket wargame. According to Matrix Games' David Heath, the game will finally begin shipping on May 27th after some development delays. A part of the "Decisive Battles of World War II" series, Korsun 44 is a World War II operational level, turn-based wargame being developed by Australian developer Strategic Studies Group (SSG). The new game will take off from The Ardennes Offensive, using an updated engine to portray the Nazi Army's desperate attempt to escape a pocket-like entrapment of the Soviet Army on the Eastern Front in 1944. The game itself will use a turn-based system involving combat preparations, recreated from the actual historical events, and combat moves against AI or PBEM human opponents. Finally, the game will offer a full-featured editor for players to recreate scenarios to their liking.

Veteran computer grognards of the 1990s will likely remember SSG's 1997 release The Ardennes Offensive and its sequel, 2001's The Ardennes Offensive 2 (review), an operational level, turn-based World War II wargame series. The second game, which garnered our prestigous The Wargamer Award for Excellence, was actually updated by original designer Roger Keating after The Ardennes Offensive failed to generate enough attention for SSI to sign SSG for another game. While the original title was in many ways a computer interpretation of a board game, SSG did do certain wonders with the ruleset, AI and interface to make the gameplay experience truly remarkable. The Ardennes Offensive is now freely available from various web sites, including The Wargamer's own Wacht am Rhein game section.

For players interested in the modern day sequel, Korsun 44, Matrix Games has opened an official web site with information on not only the game, but also full details on the actual historical events. The game will ship from Matrix Games' or from various retailers on or about May 27th. Pricing for the game is $49.99 and Korsun 44 will require a Pentium II 300 MHz (or equivalent) computer.

I tried to order on the store screen, still unavailable for purchase. Hopefully that is a correct timeframe, I am also interested in a confirmation. Gonna be a great game.

Aint found no Uk places yet, looked at Duchet, but not listed,,, but if your from Sweden give Webhallen a try and see if they stock it. I bought HOI from there on release, good service.

2by3games is the company behind games like Uncommon Valor and War in the Pacific (Gary Grigsby). You won't find any info about KP there.

Useless information here, I live approx 4 miles away from Duchet, yet it will be cheaper for me to buy it via mail.

Reason, I live on the Welsh/English border and need to pay big toll to cross border on bridge which sepertes the two countries.

Not physical in sense of barbed wire and customs posts, but there is a big river called the Severn which can only be crossed via a toll bridge. The only other alternative is a 50 mile detour which works out more expensive than the bridge.

In fact, some more useless information, at the time of construction I believe the Second Severn bridge was the largest span for a cable stayed bridge in the world.
