I have successfully installed the official patch with the game updater but my opponent says that it can only be done via Steam we are both in the same time zone so any ideas as to what is happening?

Did he buy it via Matrix or Steam? If he got it via steam then he needs to do it via steam. He might have downloaded and installed 2 versions and is playing the wrong one. The steam version installs in a different spot than the Matrix one and each game has it's own protection checks.
