Detection and Electronics Advancement

As the Allied Player I am trying to decide if it is worthwhile investing in this tech to assist in the Battle of the Atlantic. But I am uncertain how useful it will be. It seems to me that to be effective I will need to build at least 4 strategic air groups with this advancement and station one of them in each of Iceland, Halifax, England and Gibraltar. Of course, this will cost a tremendous amount of production points that I could otherwise use to purchase 4 strategic bombers, 4 armour, or 50 to 60 escorts. My experience so far is that air units very seldom find and attack subs anyway. The notes for this advancement includes "spotting"; does this mean that air units with this advancement have a better chance of spotting and attacking a sub? Even if they are helpful are they necessary? Can the War in the Atlantic be won by just researching the escort advancement and building lots of escorts?

I would be appreciative of any advice the more experienced players can give me.

I like them for the range, but they are pricey. Once they tech up some, they can score hits here and there on subs. They can do double duty against the surface navies, note. With their range they can hit enemy ports even if no subs are around depending on where you place them. I tend to have the USA build those birds rather than the British.

Sooo... dumb newb question... I guess researching this tech is not going to help Italian tactical bombers sink the pesky allied subs that keep sinking my merchant marines then, right?!

Not the existing ones. You could build a new tactical bomber with the specialty.
