Is there any way to know the quantity of mines existing in a minefield laid at a friendly base?

Sure -- try running a BB or a CV into it and see if they get hit.

Not as much as you think.

Paper and Pencil... But if you play alot or take the minefield aspect of the game very seriously, it may help to print out the game map and have it laminated. Then use a dry-erase marker to keep track of how many mines you lay where..
Of course you'll need several laminated maps if you play multiple games...
The boardgamer in me likes that as it reminds me of what you use to have to do. The computer wargamer and programmer in me dislikes it alot and wonders why the game can't simply record that in FOW style for you.
Of course another advantage to laminated maps is you can draw all over them for strategic planning (though again I suppose ultimately such a feature would be available on the computer game map as well)

This is a dumb question, but why would you want to know how many mines you have in your own minefield?

So I know how soon I need to put down another field to keep the density up. Fields degrade over time

You know it is the time when enemy TF visit your base and don't hit any mines.

I thought only deep water fields degraded with time but I guess if you are in doubt then just send another DM into the hex.

Thx all for the replies. Here is what prompted my question:Playing
Scen#14 as Allies.Few resources for a robust defense of PM/GG.
PM starts scen with a minefield, no quantity given. PM clobbered
twice by naval bombardment, shuts down field,One mine hit on BB.
Only asset for ml ops are subs, slow and don't carry much. Where to employ them? In a new field at GG or adding to the PM field?
Without knowing size(density) of PM field, hard to tell. To me, a
minefield constitutes a component of the base defense in the
same manner as troops, forts, supplies, aircraft, etc. If the base
CO knows those quantities, why not the density of the minefield?
Perhaps this could be quantified in the same manner as airfield
and fortifications, as a level.Comments?
Thx.

Too bad we can't just right -click on a hex with a friendly mine and it tells us how many mines are left. Until then keep dropping mines until your comfort level is adequate. I think you should mine G-G heavily as long as it is still yours but remember they turn against you if G-G falls.
