When is a major faction dead???

I had an unusual thing happen today.
I attacked a city belong to a major faction that started next to me. I suspect it was the capitol because it had a lot of buildings inside. Anyway, the major faction units were still around so I killed them all. The major faction still had territory so I went out and searched it. Couldn't find anything. I tried to execute spy actions but eventually got to a point where I couldn't select the major faction's territory. At one point I tried giving them a gift. That worked! I tried doing some other actions and got a cryptic message saying "you can't do that, but you also can't know the reason why". Uh...

I'm convinced this faction has no more cities. But why do they still show up on the map? Do you have to search and destroy every single remaining unit? What if the AI is hiding that unit somewhere I can't get to or find? What exactly do you have to do to eliminate a major faction? Or is this maybe just a bug in my game? I wasted a lot of time searching for a city that wasn't there :-(

I assume one is dead when it says 0 Victory score under Victory Overview. However, this is a great question, because maybe they can come back with a few units surviving.

They don't get removed but I should make sure a Major with no Hexes left on the map doesn't show up any more in the Stratagem Tab.

Also you could have been seeing ghost territory as well.

It is possible on turn X - 10 you had recon on some of that Majors Hexes...

Then on turn X -5 you lost recon on those hexes.

But the hexes got taken by somebody else (without you seeing it)

And then on turn X it looks like that Major still control those hexes, but when you move in there is actually somebody else there.

Its a FOW thing.

best,
Vic

Right, I thought of that which is why I wanted to spy those hexes... I wish there was a way to do this. I honestly could not figure it out. It still seems odds that a ghost faction can receive a gift but no other diplomatic actions. And eliminating left over hexes is not fun from a logistics point of view.

In addition, how does that work for minor powers?

I conquered the cities of two minors. After I took the first, next turn all enemy units disappeared and all its territory changed control to me. With the second, after I took the city, its units kept on fighting and I had to manually take all its hexes. I think they were both raiders.

With raiders, I've *finally* found out that they have *no* cities. This is true for arachnids and dino-riders. So You basically have to kill all their units??? But I'm guessing they respawn like indies do? It's highly annoying and I wish you could disable them (*cough* *cough*).

With minor factions that *do* have a city, then when you conquer it the territory coverts to you and their units disappear.

The weird thing with what you're describing sounds like what happened to me. The last city is gone but units persist and territory remains.

What gives? I do not like. I wish if a major faction--including my own--loses its last city it has like ONE turn to reconquer a city and establish a new SHQ before being completely wiped out. Just end it already.

Yup Slavers too. I like it. It makes it worthwhile to settle new cities yourself (otherwise if every zone has a city that whole side of things would be underrepresented I think as taking over might always just be better).

Now you can have big regions of the map without cities. Savage Lands :)

Again, as just an aside. I'd like the ability to disable such factions. I feel they're just another bad pirate mechanic. I *don't* want to add more zones with the logistics problems I already have. Just to what? Stop annoying indies from spawning? That's not the motivation I desire to found a new zone. Ug, brings back Civilization flashbacks with barbarians. So tedious.
