Tankettes?

I'm sort of missing the Tankettes for tank development. In the early game, with swarms of infantry, sometimes in mountainous terrain, I think a machine gun armed, tracked vehicle with turret would be helpful. A tankette, with its lower industrial and metal cost, would be ideal for swarming against minor powers, much the same as how the tankette was used historically. Maybe it could be an improvement on the Recon vehicle?

can i interest you in our lord and savious, the mechanized infantry?
because the way the game handles APCs is basically exactly like that

Would be neat to have:
- Truck with Machinegun Mount
- Truck with RPG Mount
Not APCs, as they have no armor option. Or they would have only 0 / 5mm / 10mm armor options, from bolted-on plating.
The ability to do drive-by shootings would make them better than just Motorized Infantry.
These things are called "Technicals" and they are quite common in war-torn zones.

I think than a truck with quad Mg would be more interesting than just MG, but I also really like the idea of having an truck with a RPG mount.

[s]Not to split hairs, but that would make it a recoilless gun not a RPG. It's a grenade because it's handheld-- even the M203, etc.[/s]
[s]I admit the MK-19 sort of blows that logic out of the water, however.[/s]
Nevermind. Nothing to see here. Move along.

Yes that sounds just like the APC.
I haven't seen the option to put a Machinegun on a tank along with its main cannon however and I'd like that as an extra anti-infantry defense. If it's not imbalanced.

Tankettes as Idea seemed to appear in the interwar years. And then just fizled out.
There are not a lot of tankettes still in use today.

The IFW/APC is that, plus transport:

The buggy might be a good fit as well, having speed on top of the other characteristics.
And of coruse the light tank is that, but with armor.

Actually, most APCS were a evolution of tankettes. Note that I created this topic when I thought tracked and wheeled vehicles were substantially different in movement: They aren't. My armored buggies are basically tankettes.
While I still miss the tankettes, it's probably best not to overemphasize the early game. It's the later game that could use more unit variety.
The big glaring flaw is the lack of a Buggy Brigade template. Absolutely no templates feature buggys, and they're awesome.
