Strange population and death figures

Several times I've generated a planet with say a 25 million pop and are then told say 65 million die in the big war...seems odd.
I usually have the opposite:
I got something like 263 Million in Colonisation, 73 million died in the war. 2.285 millions still around. Like, where did most of the population go? Who killed the remaining 70-odd %?
