Defend vs Hold

I could find much information on the effect of these two states other than if "Hold" the unit would be less likely to retreat and take more damage for not retreating. But does anyone no the details on how the two setting actually effect combat?

Things like:
If on Hold does the unit take more damage relative to attacker than it would have and how much?
How much does Hold improve the chance of not retreating? Is it a "No Retreat" or just a higher test?
Will unit's on Defend take less damage when they retreat?

Trying to get a feel for how useful the setting is or its just something you use when he position needs to be held like a VP hex.
Is it useful in other situation or it just turns a retreat into an automatic kill with little benefit.

IF I remember...Units on hold take more damage when they would normally retreat.
Instead of actually retreating, they take more damage. How much I do not know.

I have seen units on hold retreat but it exceptionally rare. They more than often are destroyed before they retreat.

Units on defend do not take less damage when they retreat...they just retreat.
