Learning AE from a WITP background using the Guadalcanal scenario vs AI
--
A beat up P39 Air group with 5 serviceable/9 damaged planed transfers from Port Moresby to Townsville to rebuild.
The group with 5 planes arrive in Townsville, the subgroup of 9 damaged planes disappears. Are the damaged planes lost, count as destroyed, are in the Twilight Zone? In WITP they would remain in PM (with all the excess pilots) and slowly repair (flying ones can transfer to join parent group)subject ot enemy activity.
Taking a look at the 5 plane group in Townsville, 12 pilots arrived with the 5 planes [though I would have 14; 5+9 but do not remember the number of pilots existed before the transfer]. Assume damage planes are lost. As plying the old game, have likely been yield a lot of planes in this manner as AI is not actually attacking PM.

Bill,
Not sure if there's something special in GC scenario...but in the Campaign game you would see a remnant in PM, with nine disabled planes and associated pilots. As AC became serviceable they would join the parent unit over time. Note, if the range requires drop tanks I do note you often have to manually intervene to fly them to the parent unit, the player AI often does not catch that subtlety and fly them auto-magicly for you.
If you disbanded the remnant in PM thinking that would help... you should have seen a message that "most planes will be lost" and "pilots returned to the pool" (or words that effect). If disbanded you've likely lost most of the AC, a few may show up as replacements in a few turns. Pilots are in the general replacement pool.

It's exactly the same in AE. Airgroup fragments with many planes do not disappear w/o additional player actions. Small fragments can repair and fly to join the main group on their own.

Confirmed, thanks. Not sure why the subgroup disappeared in my practice game. Will test in a trial and see if it appears in the next turn,.

If the destination was on a rail line, it's possible that the undamaged planes flew to the destination while the damaged planes were loaded on a train and will show up in a couple of days.

The origin was Port Moresby. I've heard of the underground railroad, but not the underwater railroad ....

Yep, poor reading comprehension on my part!

-I have verified when you transfer an air groups between cities which are on a railroad (say Townsville & Sydney) the air group makes it if it has range, the damaged/maintenance portion shows up on the next turn (and is listed in the Info/reinforcements0.
-Usually when transferring from PM to an Australian city, the damaged portion remains behind and can be transferred in segments as some planes can fly.
-What prompted my question was one case wehre the flying planes arrived and the damaged portion were no longer listed anywhere. But I hve not been able to duplicate this.
-Consider the question closed.
Thanks to all.
