Question about air units and how to use them

The manual says that air units can only attack and then move. So how does that work? Since they're pretty weak on defense and you can't stack a unit with them, when you put them on the front line, they either get destroyed or pretty close to it and become ineffective. So how do you effectively attack with aircraft given these rules? And is it the same in the WWII games as well? Thank you.

Aircraft have a range for attack. Click on the air unit and then hover over an enemy unit - you'll see whether or not that enemy unit can be targeted.
The air unit itself doesn't move on the map to do an attack, only when rebasing.
Same mechanism in the WWII games.

OK, thanks. I was expecting the unit info to tell me if it had a range, but I see that it doesn't show a range for artillery either.

They have a strike range of several hexes. So you can keep them behind the lines and target the enemy from there. Same with the WW2 games!

If you right click on a unit there are more detailed properties for the unit accessible via 'Properties'. This should show you the strike, intercept, escort range and so on for any applicable units.
