It looks like the loss of one of these SST's yields 22 victory points. Am I looking at that correctly? That seems high for a small 273 ton displacement ship. It doesn't seem worthwhile to expose it to attack because it can only transport 40 tons of supplies. Am I missing something?

They don't haul more supplies than a regular submarine, but cost just as much, are slower, and can't serve multi-roles. For these reasons most players choose not to build them.....

An "Army" submarine does seem like a contradiction in terms. I think the IJA were out of their depth if Yu know what I mean. [:'(]

I read in Submarines of the Imperial Japanese Navy by Norman Polmar that they were constructed by the Japanese Army without any consultation with the Imperial Navy. Sounds like another case of divided effort and research in the Japanese military. It's probably a good thing they didn't need torpedoes. I'd hate to see what inadequate research in that field would look like.

Oh wait. we do know what it looks like....USN torpedoes.

For that very reason I love them and build them and use them. They are fun. [:D]

and when you are starving, 40 tons of supply is a lot

I think that the SSX is way overpriced.

Did they only carry 40mt - maybe they should have more. It seems odd JPN would build ships like this if they only carried the same supply as a fully aquipped to fight sub. Shame VP cannot be adjusted in the editor to make them more worthwhile.

The sub was only 137 feet long, crudely built with no interior bulkheads, two six cylinder diesel engines and a periscope which operated by counterweights. A top surface speed of eight knots. The scope could only be raised 3 feet. The IJA called them Maru-Yu to help conceal the fact that the Japanese Army was building submarines.

Among the places they were constructed at was a locomotive factory, a gun factory, a boiler factory, none was a proper shipyard.

I don't know of any accidents involving these boats, but I think I would have rather taken my chances in a barge. Apparently a few were hauled to the US Navy Yard at Mare Island for inspection.

I'd be curious if any Colombian drug cartels have ever looked in on the the plans for these. Updated with a few modern touches like GPS and contemporary diesels and that 40 ton capacity would look pretty good. The semi-submersibles they have running now can only ship ten tons of narcotics. You might even get a few runs out of them, instead of them being one-trip disposable boats.

The cartel are probably hiring former Soviet block naval engineers turned Russian mafia to build their submersibles;

It just staggers me that the economics of drug-smuggling allows you to discard a two million dollar submersible at sea like a used beer can. But, apparently so. [X(]

It seems they can move enough cocaine in a single voyage to generate more than 100 million USD in illicit proceeds for their drug lords.
