Carrier Planes can't do anything?

So, I am using the optional rule for Carrier Planes.

Am I understanding the rule correctly that except for rebasing they cannot do anything. Can they fly interceptions?

If they are on a CV they can do all eligible missions. If they are land based they can only fly rebase missions. If they are in a port with CVs they can rebase on and off CVs without costing you an air mission from your activity limit for whatever action you chose (other than a Pass of course).

Carrier air units can only fly combat missions if they are aboard carriers at sea. Otherwise the pilots hang out at bars trying to pick up dames.[;)]

I understand the need for this rule since in the base came carrier planes are tied to the CV. I was surprised that this is still the case for the optional rule where carrier planes are actual units on the board. I think the optional rule also does not allow it as it would be a great advantage over the base game.

During WW2, especially for the Japanese, carrier squadrons did operate from land.

It was found when the CVPs could operate from land that there were too many abuses, FREX stationing all the useless 3 range CW CVPs along the coast of Africa where they could react into the zero box to escort convoys being attacked by subs and thus require the subs to roll an additional surprise diferential of 4 to enable a decent attack.

There are plenty of land based air units for the Japanese to build. It's just that they cost more than the 0 or 1 BP for carrier air units.

Strangely enough, it's better for the Japanese to build the FTR's and the NAV, than to fill all the carriers with CVP. Even the lousy FTR's are valuable to the Japanese, if only to fly into the zero box to defend the precious convoys...

And the Japanese have some really good midwar fighters, too. And they want every NAV they can get. Not to mention their absurd ATR.

Are you planning to implement the Dames in Flames optional rule? That pretty much makes the game unwinnable...

Well, Sweden somehow becomes a major power with that rule. Finland, and Norway, becomes, in practice, unconquerable. [:D]
