Multiple States of War

A question has come up that always confused me.
Italy is not at war with the CW but is at war with France. Germany and CW are at war.
Italy has their units all over conquered France. The CW is also there.
Can the CW attack Italian units?
Can they attack if stacked with Germans?

very simple, you attack the hex, not the units. so if the Italian are in a german controlled hex, they can be attacked

And the other way around: you can't attack an Italian controlled hex (even if there are German units in them)...

So...if Italy had helped to conquer France and captured a bunch of hexes then the CW can't attack those hexes, right?

another thing, if Italy conquers France. all CW units are thrown out, as they are not at war with the conquere
