There are a number of threads here discussion the differences - try a search on SPWW2. We just had a big dicussion of teh pros and cons a month or so back.

In a nutshell - SPWW2 is based on DOS SP2 and focuses on improving campaign play against the computer. (ie most of their work went into the random map and battle generator and expanding the OOBS). Its DOS4GW extender does not function on some video cards (my early GeForce for example - none of the SSI DOS4GW based game (like the original SP games, TANKS! and Age of Rifles) do either <img src="frown.gif" border="0">

SP:WaW is based on SP3 in native windows form and focuses on increasing the fidelity of the combat models first of all, and focusing on enhancements for scenarios designed by humans (taken to the next level in the Mega-Campaign). We also added online play so humans can play humans. We spent time on enhancing the major power campaigns and are adding a capability in v7 to use a human opponant as "opfpor" commander in campaigns (not really a two player campaign since only one players force "carries through" the other player just fills in for the AI).

SP:WaW runs in 800x600 mode vice 640x480 but does require more computer memory (we recommend 64MB) but we feel is a much more accurate portrayal of WW2 era combat. SPWW2 does has advantages if you only play campaigns against the computer on a low end machine, but if you want human competition and human created scenarios, on a modern PC we feel SP:WaW is superior.

Paul the only copy of SP1 I have is the beta demo that came out with some dumpware cd collections, it will not work on my voodoo 3 3000 unless I load up univbe/display doctor (or whatever it is called now) to simulate vesa 2.0. Then it runs full screen just fine. Surprising since I had assumed a modern card like the voodoo would have maintained compatability with the vesa specs. Some old dos games just don't see it as vesa compliant. Perhaps if you want to run some of those games sometime you might try loading a vesa 2.0 driver for your card (be it univbe or display doctor, or whatever they are calling it now).
thanks, John.

I just downloaded the spww2v4 and installed it.It didn't work.supposed to work with either sp2 or sp3 cd but neither worked.
all I got was compressed game area running along top of screen.

So unless I got the wrong file or something I vote thumbs down.SpWAW is smooth running and far more professional.

I havent had a problem running either.

SPWW2v4 serves a purpose, and I like it.

You need to follow the DOS set-up instructions very carefully for SPWW2. This might be your problem.

As far as SPWW2 vs SPWAW - I like 'em both.

I too like both games, unfortunately I just upgraded from a Matrox G400 Max to a geforce 3 and SPWW2 no longer runs.
The problem as john G pointed out is that under Dos4gw virtually all games require a Vesa 2.0 compliant card, unfortunately after a few tests i found that the Geforce series are not seen as Vesa compliant.
The problem is in the detection routines not the newer cards. I have a second problme in that I use the Phillips Acoustic edge sound card and most detection routines dont find it, even trying to manually setup the card it is not seen.
My solution was to put together a Dos computer with older boards that I picked up from a junk shop in Panthip plaza (thailand's main computer centre).
If you get the video described just a band at the top of the screen then the driver is the problem.
