Scenario documents button always blank in .40

New player and an odd issue. I'm running the 4.1.0.40 version of the game.

Just bought it a few days ago. In 0.20 the "scenario documents" button in the scenario selection screen works. I happened to check that when I first booted the game after initial install and before I updated.

Then I updated to .40 and none of those scenario docs are available. I can install user scenarios in the "My Games" folder hierarchy so that parts working right but the "scenario documents" button remains blank.

Well...don't know if this matters but I just noticed that the file toawlog.txt indicates that my documents directory is set as follows:

"Start :Document Directory : 'D:\Users\apres\Documents\My Games\The Operational Art of War IV\'"

That directory doesn't exist because I have two drives. My Users folder is on C:\. Is there anyway to tell TOAW IV this?

Still don't undertand why it won't find the base game's scenario documents though:
"D:\Games\Matrix Games\The Operational Art of War IV\Scenarios\"
This folder is right where the game is.

However, downloaded scenarios loaded into My Documents folder on C:\ ARE playable in the program...just no scenario documents or scenario selection background pictures.
D:\Users\apres\Documents\My Games\The Operational Art of War IV\Scenarios

Any ideas? It's easy to work around but am concerned I somehow broke my install.

I also am running 4.1.0.40 and my doc locations in the log looks correct, but none of the out-of-box scenarios has a 'scenario documents', only a custom scenario I added has the button and goes to the associated document. Did not figure out a solution.

I moved an out-of-box scenario into its corresponding folder in my ...\Documents\my games\The Operational Art of War IV\Scenarios directory, and it shows the 'scenario documents' button and opens correctly.

OK. Thanks for that answer. Wierd. I looked at this in version 0.20 before I installed 0.40 and it worked. I promise. Opened up Word automatically and everything.

OK again. I learned two things.

First - the user-created scenario I downloaded for testing did not use a file format for its documents that TOAW IV recognized. When I changed the doc to the right format it worked.

Second - your trick with moving out-of-the-box scenarios to My Documents .... Scenarios works! Thanks. I'm still a little concerned that I've installed the game on C:\ and D:\ using both Matrix' downloader+patch 0.40 and Steam's install process and the game won't recognize documents that are for scenarios that come with the game. That makes me concerned that something is wrong with my setup.

If any of the devs get a chance to look at this I'd appreciate it, even though dduckett has found a workaround.

I investigated this back when .40 was released:
https://www.matrixgames.com/forums/fb.asp?m=4734251
https://www.matrixgames.com/forums/fb.asp?m=4735154

First reports something was wrong:
https://www.matrixgames.com/forums/fb.asp?m=4733151
https://www.matrixgames.com/forums/fb.asp?m=4733792

And yes, *moving* the scenarios to the Documents folder will "fix" the problem - until a new patch comes along and writes any updates to the Program Files again... [8|]

But for all we know it's fixed in a patch they're testing. Problem is the release schedule for patches here is glacial...

Shadrach,

Thanks! My forum search clearly did not include the obvious course of searching for the patch name and not the problem description. Thanks!

I have effectively (with dduckett's assistance above) duplicated your solution linked above and I'm glad that my install isn't seriously "broken"...but I am concerned that the software isn't working as designed.
