I have a situation where enemy troops have landed in a friendly base hex but the base is still mine. I have a DD and a CM in the hex and there are no enemy ships or aircraft in the hex. Can I have the DD and or the CM shell the enemy troops? If they do will they also run a risk of hitting my troops?
I also have aircraft at the airbase in the hex. Can they bomb the enemy troops?
Looked for an answer but couldn't find one.
I saw that the CM can not be in a "Bombardment" TF but it can be in a "Amphibious TF". Is that a way to do it?

As far as I know:
yes, you can bombard the enemy troops
yes, you can bomb the enemy troops
nope, the CM can't do it that way

So I take it that the DD could do it in a "Bombardment TF". What TF does the CM have to be in as it can't be in a Bombardment TF?

It can be in a mine laying TF. I suggest that you read the manual as I am sure that it is in there.

I know the different TF that a CM can be in but I am unclear if they will be able to shell the enemy troops in the hex if they are in a Minelaying TF or any of the other TF that the CM can be in.
To ask the question another way: What type of TF will allow the CM shell the enemy troops in the hex?

No, ships only fire on ground targets when they’re in a bombardment TF or during an amphibious assault. If they’re in a mine laying TF (or others, like escort, transport, cargo, etc), they won’t engage the enemy troops.

None. The CM will not attack the enemy troops.

I guess I then have to decide on another use of the CM this turn. It would have been nice to get those guns firing!

There are tables in the Manual that show, by ship type, what types of TFs they can be in.

And no, you will never hit your own troops when you bomb or bombard. The hex is 46 statute miles across - lots of room to shoot at enemy enclaves.
