Just got accepted into the IT masters program in Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane

I had 12 of you guys (and girls) in my journalism course last year in Melbourne. Long way to travel to get to school.

PzB - pity you didn't let us know sooner - you could have camped at my place (Sydney, but you could commute every day ) and I could have camped at yuor place.

A translation of Oz for a Norwegian:

Sydney is the greatest city in the world, (followed by Oslo in my opinion), when it comes to culture, cleanliness, beauty, fun and all other important stuff.

The other Oz capitol cities are all worth a visit, if only for a laugh.

If you imagine that Brisbane is like Bergen, only bigger, less maritime oriented, and all concrete instead of wood. Also, Brisbane just can't offer the fresh seafood markets that also seem to sell tonnes and tonnes of the best cherries in the world like Bergen can (not sure where they came from but the cherries while I was in norway were very, very impressive. Much like the chili flavoured biscuit snack.

Melbourne is sort of like Trondheim with less to do and the same amount of trams as Oslo.

Canberra is like Bodo, well spaced out and BLOODY WINDY during winter. On the other hand, Canberra is still bitter during summer while Bodo is nice and warm etc.

Actually, unless you're coming to Sydney, moving from Norway to Oz is a downgrade. Believe me fellow Ozzies, although it isn't home, and it isn't Sydney, Norway is a fantastic place for hang gliding, skiing, glacier hikes, and taking your partner for FANTASTIC seafood and an excellent selection of Australian wines!

They've even got fantastic (better than many Oz brands) beer!

The convalescent camp sounds like a good place to settle down...

I did apply for a couple of unies in Sydney as well, but QUT replied first and I didn't have to take this expensive IELTS english test in Oslo to get in. All well as long as you guys down there don't sound like a cockney on speed!

I think the mentioning of 300 sunny days a year and the price of beer did something to me. Over here it's more like 200 days wind & rain... You don't even wanna know the price of beer :p

Going to travel around the place - as long as some malicious reptile don't shut me down that is...

Will surely meet you guys over a beer if possible!

Unfortunate place to have to stay that. Try to get down to Sydney as much as possible, as Sydney is the best city in the world (with the best people to match).

We also have the best looking beaches in the world (oh, and women to match).

This is kinda releated -- I've got a friend (my age, mid 20's) who is going to Australia and New Zeland for vacation in Feb of next year. (Being from Maine, he wanted to go someplace warm. ) Where in the country are prime areas for a tourist to vist, especily with a minimum of culture shock?

Tell him to try our Northern Territory, bloody top quality holiday, and great weather in the winter. It's tropical, so during winter in doesn't rain, their isn't much humidity, and you can still get a sun tan. Plenty to do if he likes bush walking etc as it's pretty much an untouched area of the world.

Whilst February is winter in Maine, it is summer in Australia and Darwin is one of the most humid places on the earth.

February, the south coast of New South Wales is heaven.

.....and if he wants culture and babes, then Melbourne is THE place to be in summer.

I've heard the Great Barrier reef is worth a look.

No infact I've spent a bit of time there and it is absolutely fantastic.

If he decides on tropical Queensland where it will definitely be warm then your mate will need a few days on the reef either scuba or snorkel.

Culture shock would be pretty limited going to Townsville / Cairns areas, mainly because there is no culture there, excluding sport, beer and an outdoors lifestyle.

There's plenty of pristine rainforest and fine fine weather to make up for it.

Ooops, no wonder I am hopeless at this game, I fail to see the detail.......I missed the Feb bit. So yeah, Joe is right, Northern Territory is one of the most humid places on earth....in the Summer :rolleyes:

But seriously Soulblazer, it depends on what sort of a category you can stereotype your friend into.

For example,
If they are culturally oriented (gay), then send them to Melbourne.

If they are outdoor oriented (red-neck), send them to Queensland (where they can view the largest Aussie population of One Nation Voters (primitive Red necks - nothing on some of the shotgun toting, mullet wearing, pick-up-truck drivin' boys I met in Tenessee though)).

If they are animal oriented (if you get the drift) then send them to NZ (velcro gloves are cheap I hear).

If they are mid 20s, female, 6 ft tall, slim, and are often mistaken for any of toady's popular international super models, then send them to Sydney

My friend is male, BTW (sorry I did'nt say that) but quite single. He's going to New Zealand first, but a different reason -- recently it turns out he has a long lost grandparent in Wellington, and he's been invited to come vist. After that he'll jet over to Australia for a week before returning to the States after spending a few days in Hawaii.

(And you don't know want to KNOW how much he's dropping on this whole trip! )

But yes, Maine is VERY cold in Feb, the middle of our winter -- and if next year is anything like LAST year, he'll want to get FAR away from there.

He does like culture (amatur artist and guitar player) but he can drink me under the table, so I'm sure he'll want to experience both worlds.

But for some reason he's interested in going to the west coast, probaly Perth, as well. Why? I'm not sure -- he compared it to seeing both New York and San Fran. :rolleyes:

Anyway, I wish I could go with him. But one of these days, once I can afford it. The plane trip is not exactly short, either, to get down there.

BTW, who said they have been to Tenn? I hope you visted other states. My parents moved to Knoxville from New Hampshire about five years ago, but Knoxville (in the eastern part of the state) is a very northern city and quite nice. No rednecks there.
