Is it possible to play well without *fully* understanding all the supply rules?

I must confess, even after re-reading the manual several times and playing some partial games vs the AI, whilst I have some idea, I still don't think that I fully grasp all the supply rules. Do you just play with a rough "feel" for the Supply rules, or do you have a deep understanding of all the supply rules and pay close attention to them? Is it still possible to play well without fully understanding all the supply rules, at least initially? I'm finding this one of the hardest aspects of the game to learn (also still figuring out the naval rules, though I like the concepts).

You can play with knowing the basics. The game stresses very little micromanaging.
These might help

Of course after having played so much I kind of know the rules but I never give them much thought. You can play well without complete understanding. I still wonder why Leningrad seems to be in supply in my Axis game vs ComadrejaKorp. If I didnt play and updated the AAR so much I might have taken the time to figure it out myself [:)]

I think that the water road in the lake Ladoga allows Leningrad to be in supply an replicate the historical situation.

Okay, so sounds like I should just persevere and play the game more, and when there is a supply situation that I don't understand, to try to figure out why.
BTW do oil-using units use less oil per turn if ending their turn on a railway line or other Supply 9 source? I thought I read that somewhere, but can't now find the reference.

p. 19 Upkeep
Any land, air, or naval unit in port not on a map level 9 supply consumes 1/3rd an oil to transport supplies to it by land.
