[1.06.10] AI builds large numbers of farms

In my current game I'm seeing the major AI build many more farms than seemingly would be needed to feed its zones or armies- multiple size 3-4 farms in each zone. Xeno-agri world and from my own farms I the water cost is extremely low if that might be influencing AI decision making.

Maybe the AI does it for making Bio Fuel?

I have seen that behavior sometime but at least my own territory has lots and lots of oil. Hirschburg is IIRC a one-zone major and it doesn't have any bio-fuel refineries, definitely nowhere near what would be required to use all the food it's making(though maybe it's being sold on market and someone else is building lots of bio-fuel I can't see?).

Can confirm. In my current multi-player game a Major AI that I conquered had heavily invested in a Ice Mine, Food Dome, Bio-Fuel Refinery chain, while it had several Oil wells, even a level III in operation. What a waste.

There is a lot of Ice on the right hand side of the Image. Maybe the whole planet freezes over in a cold season, resulting in the AI having 0 Income from those farms?
We got no data on how those perform across the year.

The xenofauna on this planet is really, really cold(and dry, too) tolerant. I'd have to double check how much but I think full productivity is retained until -40 C, and min production is -60 C. It's cold but I don't think even close to the poles it gets quite that cold.
