Okay, where's the post about unescorted Betty attacks..

I didn't read it in depth - but it seemed to say that an unescorted Betty torpedo raid would abort if there was a CAP present - NOT!!! Just tell that to the boys on the Hobart - in port in Cairns, and got spatted by a Betty carrying a torpedo all the way from Rabaul and flying through a CAP and managing to hit the cruiser and do 51 Sys Damage, 40 floatation.

I have a question. What is the range of a G4M with a torpedo loaded?

The range is ... umm ... Cairns :D

And no, CAP has to be known! to be present for the abort to happen, perhaps bad intel made Japan launch the strike thinking there was no CAP there.

Separate to this: Was the ship in port (as in disbanded) or was it a valid naval target (a Task Force)? Not real sure that a Land based CAP protecting the BASE qualifies as CAP for a ship that is passing through the hex unless it was specifically assigned to protect the ship which is LRCAP instead of CAP.

If she was disbanded in port, the attack would not have been made with torpedoes.

CAP over a port does, indeed, protect TFs present there (unless the TF merely passed through the hex during the turn and did not stop there).

Hi, How much CAP? Less then 9 aircraft is not considered enough to cause an abort. (The abort is never automatic it is just another check like morale, base overload, leadership, HQ just easy to fail if enough CAP is present (and no escort))

The CAP was known...

it showed up on the combat screen. 12 Betty's, 12 P-39D. All one big happy family. I don't waste time with combat animations, just want the results - not that it would have made any difference. But, the CAP was there in equal numbers with the attacking force in a port, and couldn't stop the attack.

AS far as the question about Betty's with torpedo's - admittedly I don't have the library I once had, and perhaps don't have as many brain cells either - but that seems a %&*$@#& long way for a Betty to lug a torpedo. I know they had the range with bombs (and even then I am not sure about the payload), but I seem to recall that they didn't have that kind of range with a torpedo onboard.

Put it together, and I don't have a lot to do except watch my ships get sunk in port with nothing short of an Air Wing to stop it. I guess I should be grateful though, I had three CV's, a BB, a couple of tankers, and a flock CA's DD's and of transports at or around Guadalcanal, and they ignored them completely.

Just as Japan can not leave ships in Rabaul, the Allies can not leave anything north of the line that cuts from Cairns across to Luganville.

Both sides have the exact same risk. This is a war, there is no SAFE place to be. Since B-17's generally can't be stopped, Japan is even worse off in this respect. At least Nells/Bettys drop like flys against CAP

(The P-39 is NOT a cap plane though, use it for ground attacks, performs nicely in that roll)

Side Note: watching the actual combat animations while tedious at times does provide a huge amount of additional information that is not to be found in the AAR or combat report. Had you watched, you probably would have seen the 12 aircraft on both sides with not shots fired as the P-39 did not successfully intercept the Bettys. Your P-39's were probably up at 10,000 feet while the Bettys popped in at 200 feet and took their shots ...

Hi, I thought the torpedo weighed the same as the bomb load (around 2100lbs) I think the Betty had a range of around 1350 miles (since the weight is the same)
