Playing as Axis. First time actually.

June 1944
I have stalled for some time in Russia.
Finland is about to fall.
Allies have landed in strength in France.
I don't feel I have overwhelming numbers on either front.

I can easily see I miscalculated on many things earlier and now I feel this is going to turn on me and I will be squeezed all the way back to Berlin.

Do you play out games that seem to have turned on you?
How do you make it at least a learning experience?
Can you make a comeback?

Or... simply start over?

Play it out. It is still a win... from the education and learning. A half game does not show you the end game.

Play it out! If the tables were turned would you want your opponent to quit on you and not allow you the satisfaction of a job well done.

Absolutely! To defend is painful but you will learn a lot!!

I take all units I don't need to avoid an imminent collapse and either invade Turkey (which I hate; big amorphous blob of a country blocking my access to delicious resources) or try to stage an end run invasion of the southern US (political reasons).

Make it your goal to take it past May 45 and you change history

There's not much of the southern US in this game to invade. Just half of Virginia and North Carolina.

I'll take whatever I can get at.

I don't see a problem if you say to opponent hey man I'm beat. Once the allies start getting 2000 points more a turn than Axis it can get boring for Allies 2. I prefer to play it out myself but up to the individual.

I agree with Dorky8 - it might be as boring for the winner as the loser. Ask your opponent if they want to continue and decide amicably. Just don't stop the game without any communication first - two people are playing the game.

I always try to play it out, as to not is to rob your opponent of their hard won victory. I know I dislike someone quitting on me just because they are losing. This being said, if both sides communicate and come to an agreement to end early, based on whatever terms they decide, that is also ok.

Side note, it would be good to have an option for the AI to take over play if one of the human players drops out. Close Combat allows this and it is great. It allowed me to finish a campaign of Close Combat Last Stand Arnhem after my friend, who was playing the Germans and was quite well defeated, to leave while I just finished up the campaign vs the AI to finish the game.

End game play can lead to some interesting gambits....when I'm on the bad end of a match, I still revel in trying to wriggle out of the noose! [:D]

Exactly this - currently in January 1946 in one game and a few turns away from taking Berlin. My opponent was keen to stretch it into 46, I was happy to see how stomping across Europe turned out. Other people on either side might have got bored!
