Forts

Looking at the map, it occured to me that due to the scale, both Singapore and Manila bay comprise of a single hex, making a direct sea assault of both locations possible. Which brings me to my question. How are the permenant fortresses in these locations modeled? Are they simply CD arty units as in UV or are there some sort of special modifiers involved? I ask because IMO CD units in UV are largely ineffective, but a direct sea assault of Manila or Singapore, if not suicide should be at least next to impossible without horrendous losses.
Can any of the alpha testers shed some light on this? Also sort of on the same topic. Is there a land bridge connecting Singapore to the mainland? And if so can it be blown? And if it can be blown do you need barges or landing craft to attack via the mainland?
Thanks for any insight.

This is a damned dood question..., and will hopefully recieve
some answers from those "in the know" soon.
I can help in one respect. There was a Bridge to the mainland,
and it was blown. Yamashita's boys crossed the straits using
captured civilian shipping from Malaya itself (Another British
bungle in a Campaign fraught with them) and so did not need
any barges or landing craft brought out. I'm not sure that
even I can make a case for the British destroying the civilian
shipping, as historically they were still at the "This sort of thing
just isn't done" stage in so much of their thinking in this theatre.
If there had been an outbreak of common sense in the Malayan
High Command, coupled with the ruthless determination to see
it through, then Percival probably could have held out for several
additional months and given history the "Battling Bastards of
Singapore" to go with those of Bataan. In the end, the result
would not be in doubt---but it would have been a boost for
British and Commonwealth morale.

Some of the CD units in WitP are far more formidable than anything you've seen in UV (think Death Stars).
Special rules, etc - I'm not going to be the one who posts details on planned special rules in a public forum. :p I've seen what can happen when posters disagree with the rule (or what they think is the rule). Maybe one of the other testers (who understands the scope of the NDA) can enlighten you. What I will say is that these types of rules do get a mention from time to time in testing and WitP is not yet in its final form.

Yeah I knew there was a causway. Just dont know if there is on in the game. There is no bridge blowing in UV, but then again I dont think there were any significant bridges in the solomons. I think the scope of WitP warrants eng. units the ability to blow bridges, rails, refineries ect...
Most of the small crafts were captured in Penang. Supposedly they were orderd blown, but in the panick of bugging out, the orders were not carried out.
Since it looks like Singapore and the south tip of Malya comprise of one hex, Im not clear how loading and unloading barges in the same hex will be implemented when that hex includes two seperate land masses.

Thanks for your reply.
I understand what you are saying. Put me down with those infavor of special rules in this case.
The great advantage the permanent forts like the ones in Manila bay, were higly accurate pre-plotted fireing solutions. Which enabled almost pinpoint accurate fire to be brought down on any point within the surounding waters. Not to mention that ground mounted CD will always be more accurate than ship mounted arty.
I just think allowing a player to take Manila or Singapore by directly landing troops there is just too unrealistic. If it was even remotely possible why did the Japanese choose to march the length of Malaya and nearly the length of Luzon to accomplish those goals?
