You idiots are still dicking around with this game? For Godz sake, let it go! Us grognards that cut our computer wargaming teeth on this game, trashed this Matrix fiasco along time ago.
For all that is sacred, quit trying to come out with something new! There are too many alternatives to Pac War out there, and those of us that care, went back to the original Grigsby versions along time ago.
Soldier, you are out of line!

The war against Japan was the greatest naval war ever fought, and Pacific War remains the best computer simulation of it fully up and running. Historians haven't yet lost their interest; I see no reason why game enthusiasts should.

From what I can tell, the good Major is only expressing his preference for the pre-Matrix versions of PW, a preference I am trying hard to overcome myself. Something solid has been lost in the recent incarnations, despite the stellar efforts of Jeremy Pritchard. Maybe it should have been left alone in its quirky, flawed original incarnation. The more you play with it, the weirder it gets.
I'm still rummaging around in both the new Matrix version and the last two pre-Matrix editions. My jury's still out, but I seem to be having more fun with the early games than the recent ones so far.

..and after these words were spoken by MajCatastrophe, there was much wailing and gnashing of teeth...
On a serious (& less religious) note - is it worth 'upgrading' to v3.2 from 3.1 for PBEM? From what I read, most of the changes involved improvements to the AI.

I think it is... My best PBEM game so far is on v3.2... I think that Japanese have a slightly more freedom of operations (if you choose your theathers once oil reservs drop to 4000) than earlier so it's much more interesting to play (and harder for Allies, but they are still supirior, as they should be)

Aussie, we have had a bug free game in 3.1 so far. I think it was better that we started with 3.1 after hearing the complaints about 3.2.
And you propably think I have had enough freedom in my attacks.

MajCatastrophe is right !

The game is stupid, has poor graphics (if the display can be called "graphics" at all), no sound and only numbers, letters and boxes ...
Every real strategy lover needs fine pictures, tiny soldiers moving around, tiny tankies driving from one side to another plus multum of animations as a cut scene for every game day ...
The game is also too complicated. Players should have only one button (i.e. mouse 1 button) to use - who can trigger it faster on and on - should be the victor.
That's what I call STRATEGY !

Ver 3.2 versus 3.1

IMHO, the upgrade is well worth while. The major things are that China is back in the game, and the Japanese have a serious chance of conquering India. (In 3.1, the British had units in the "To Middle East" base that put up a great defense if the Japanese got that far.)
Also, transport aircraft are back, allowing isolated garrisons on Timor and elsewhere to continue to be a thorn in the enemy's side. Lastly, the range of the P-40 has been increased back to 3, and you'd be surprised what a difference that makes.

Yeah, who needs a game that actually requires the player to no something about history. Better to stick with Donkey Kong or one of those flash brain dead first person shooter games.
