Clarification of Weather Effects

I want to clarify weather effects on land and air combat. For example in snow it indicates land combat is -35% and that air is 50%. Is the land combat modifier applied to attack and defense? In regards to the air, in snow German and Italian air would be reduced by 50% for air combat whereas Russian air would not be effected, is that correct?

My understanding is that only the attack value is modified by the weather modifier (-35% in your example) for land combat. Both the land attack and air attack modifiers affect the Russians as well as the Axis. To be clear, the only benefit the Russians (and Finns but not us Canadians) receive in snow and blizzard weather is that their effectiveness is not reduced by the weather. So if you want your Russians to be able to attack effectively in snow and blizzard you will need to give some of them the "Winterized" specialty (which to the best of my knowledge no one ever does).

That is correct. Winterized basically doubles the combat value of a unit.

Thank you for the replies. How much is the effectiveness reduced?
I agree with Harry in that I can't see anyone using the winterized specialty since it only applies to a limited number of turns compared to all the other specialties which are active every turn regardless of the weather.
Maybe a better rule would have been to give the Siberian units that come on November 1 1941 the winterized specialty.

I don't know of anyone ever winterising a unit. Giving it to the Siberians (who were fully winterised in RL) would help with the '42 problem that the USSR faces.

I used Winterized on a few Armored units and found it very helpful in the winder '41/'42 [:)] Needless to say after that I kept them up North get get more 'bang for my buck' lol.

Historically the Germans thought that Russia would be conquered in a couple of months, certainly before winter. Their troops were not winterized like the Russians were, especially the ones they transferred from Siberia. In addition I believe the winter of 41/42 was very severe so I'm surprised that German combat factors are also not reduced 35% or maybe a smaller percentage when defending. The Russians were also more mobile in the snow as some of their units had skis. In addition the T-34 with it's wider tracks could move faster than the Germans tanks which had narrow tracks. Historically the Russians conducted a winter offensive around Moscow and pushed the Germans back from the city. In my PBEM game the Germans attacked when the weather was cold and surrounded the strongest Russian tank unit forcing it to surrender. To me the effects of the winter of 41/42 do not accurately reflect the historical situation.

I tried it...it is not useful.
Armor with 5 moment get one attack unless adjacent to a unit. And if the unit retreats even moving in the winter takes so much of their movement they do not get to attack again.
I agree that the Siberians should all arrive with it as their standard, though I wonder if players would complain that they wanted to give them a different ability.
The weather does not affect the Germans enough in 41 but then again this is not a historical game...just a game based on history...so weather changes it a lot, especially in 41.

I don't know many gamers who would moan about getting some extra freebie bonuses on a few units, because there are never enough speciality points to go round, but I suppose there may always be one
